Do you know where your prostate is?!

There is a great deal of coverage on TV today promoting awareness of prostate cancer.

Possibly a daft question given the nature of the site but guys if you thought you had a problem would you be deterred from seeking medical advice if you thought it involved a rectal examination which might be uncomfortable/embarrassing?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

There is also a blood test for the markers. You don't have to do straight to a rectal examination - unless you want to.

I did say it was possibly a daft question to ask on a site like this!!

How many of us tho know men who would put their health at risk rather than face the possibility of a simple health check?

Is it in your mouth?

I know where it is, I am not looking forward to the examination though. The older men get the less interested a dr is in his balls, and more in his arse

little house on the praire

But what's the difference between a man and woman having a rectal examination.

I had to have a camera up my bum and it was a lot less uncomfortable than the one down my throat

If you dont know, Nurse Sophie will be with you shortly. Thankfully all the significant men in my life have willingly had checks.

I don't think it is any worse nor was I suggesting that women do not have rectal exams, but I do think that generally women are more used to having invasive examinations by the time they reach the age most men begin to face prostate exams. Many women will have had them during pregnancy or childbirth and with the onset of smear testing aged 20 (now 25. I'm also not suggesting that women don't find these uncomfortable/embarrassing but my question referred to men specifically based on today's TV coverage which is what raised the question in the first place x

The rectal exam is not painful plenty of lube is used.

A blood test will only give a hint that there is a problem.

A rectal exam of the prostate will indicate size and if there are any lumps as the prostate is normally smooth.

Avoiding the exam due to embarassement or pain is not worth the risk

Youre in trouble if you keep them with your prostate!

Had anyone had biopsies taken from their prostate? I have and it's not a nice experience, mine was enlarged and they couldn't find any infection so they took the next step. Feels like they had stuck a red hot poker in it

But it was only a side effect of the meds I was on at the time thankfully, so yeah I know exactly where my prostate is because it twinges everytime I think about it

Ouch!! Glad it was nothing sinister.

I didn't imagine there would be many men reading this who don't know where their prostate is to be honest (hence the daft question reference) but it was the question raised on the news bulletin which led to my OP.

If i'm honest. I never searched for mine. Don't think i've got one lol.

...haven't been for a health check on that. Not a fan of the doctors.

At your age it is rare for there to be a problem but it doesn't hurt to be aware!! Doctors would not randomly check unless you presented with symptoms that indicated a need to.

Prostate problems usually arise in men over 50, the risk increases with age and is more common in men of Afro-Caribbean origin.

the initial test for prostate cancer is a blood test, no internal examination required.

If the blood result has a score outside the norm, a further test can be done, that takes 30 seconds, and 2 fingers.
