my mum is english my dad was scottish and my grandad was irish.so im as british as you can get .will scotland be better off alone.? do the rest of the world think scotland are mad and will it harm all our econonomies

UKIP beat the Lib Dems in a by election in Fife tonight.

Labour won, getting 55% of the vote, almost exactly twice-that's TWICE- the SNP vote.

I (Andy) am a Scot living in England. My position is this: the ability to define your own future and direction is far more valuable than economic considerations. It is the principle, we have gone to war as the UK to provide independence for some counties as if a population wants independence then by principle it must be provided.

Economics are not important. However I will say this. Simply no one knows if it will be better or worse. Anyone who says different is partisan and is trying to make a point to further their own aims and wishes. I am an ardent nationalist who loves Scotland and I can genuinely say without prejudice that people in England do not have the ability to understand it from the Scottish perspective as they have never experienced how 1 sided the UK is in many aspects. I live in England and love this country, I have enjoyed living here and will continue to do so for many years. Any Scot who wants independence simply because they dislike the English is a fool and racist, however that should not take away from the principle that people have a right to self determination.

I've said this in the other threads but I would be very sad to see Scotland go but wish them all the best if they do decide to.

I for one would relish the opportunity to be able to wipe the slate a start a new system and get rid of the deadwood we currently have.

If it is a case of Scottish nationalist pride then that is obviously something I can't fully understand but respect.

I really do hope it isn't a landslide no vote as it will show the amount of discontent and malaise there is with the current system/government and maybe we can all start working together to fix the problems we have in the UK.

I consider myself British, not English.

its an interesting debate, and one that will rage on long after any vote has been cast, counted and recast.

i for one would rather Scotland not split, but also, understand that Scots have a national pride that the English seem to be almost embarrassed to embrace about themselves.

if Scotland goes, then the public can hold their heads up and stand proud they chose their own future, and similarly if they vote no and stay in the union and give the SNP the message they would rather they negotiate with the UK government for better economic strategies throughout rather than the toys out the pram stance.

oh, and i count myself as English before British, and why shouldnt i?

Suggesting that economics are not important flies in the face of the results of 2013 ScotCen.

It seems most people are weighing up Separation in terms of the effect it will have on their pocket.

Will they detach it from the rest of the UK and sail it away though? Being in the North East it will mean we will get even more beautiful rugged coastline.

I would prefer us to stay one big happy family though. I like Scotch Pies and would hate them to be made illegal. Plus Haggises are cute.

surely the economics are the most important factor in any sensible decision we take, mortgage, using credit etc its paramount that you dont over stretch..

without a viable economic plan its dead in the water, one thing Scots are not and that is daft..

so far those for independence especially in the launch of the 'white paper' look to be ducking several major issue's..

whether thats cos they know the whole economic plan will not work may be the case or it may be ok..?

who knows but by assuming that post a yes vote the currency will still be sterling and that EU membership is a shoe in looks a bit naive..

Hello Andy,

I, too, am an expatriate Scot and very proud of my nationality.

I think it is pie in the sky or pure dreamworld if you like that being independent from the U.K. has any benefit for the population of Scotland.

In what way are the aspirations of the resident Scottish any different from the rest of the U.K. that they feel the need to take a different route, to where?

Mr Salmond once said that he doesn't want decisions made in London as it is so far away; that argument stands on a simple fact of geography but the two capitals of England and Scotland could well be just miles apart, it's purely a chance of geography. Distance doesn't make a reason to split.

Economics are irrelevant, that is until you have no income.
