Having had similar issues on Facebook (which we are no longer on) with the police "unable" to do anything about it the best answer is not to use social media.

But mr collymore can't do that because he courts publicity (good or bad) in his career choice.

Wow, your life was threateend at location "A", so the solution is to stop going there. So what about the pub? the supermarket? The football ground? The park? The bus stop? Or even, outside your own front door? What do you advise then? "Stop going there" and your life stop altogether?

And if it was your kids who got threatened in school: you take them out of that school... or report to the authorities to deal with it?

So him going to the police is him failing to "Man up"? You suggest his reporting to the police somehow makes him a coward instead of taking matters into his hands "like a real man would".

My thoughts run similar. There was a time when the way to deal with bullies was to "ignore them, they will get bored and go away".

Not so true anymore, these days, bullies see inaction as permission to carry on, so they escalate. the only way to deal with bullies is to stop them in their tracks, full stop! If a bully thinks whatever repercussion hits them is harsh, then they should not have been doing it in the first place.

Exactly! If everyone that ever received abuse on one media outlet or the other had to accept "walking away" as the solution, what would be left?

Lets assume the OP received some nasty abuse in email on Fabs, would the solution be to "close his profile and leave Fabs"? No, he would be told to report to admin. It would not make him less of a man doing so. Him leaving on the other hand would mean there was gradually more victims for the sender of such abuse to focus on, till the site was full of troublemakers.

its not uncommon according to 5live that twitter takeup to 30 days to even acknowledge to complainants an issue raised...

This OP is just beyond belief.

Of course Stan C should report this abuse to the police. He's not just complaining about the abuse aimed at him, but about the growing problem of cyber bullying.

Not having to watch the impact of your written words removes for many the responsibility they should feel. It's a hell of a problem, and 'manning up and ignoring it' is entirely wrong and counterproductive. Education on the subject should start at school.

Turn on Crimewatch just now and you'll see just how serious the Police are taking this and other abuse just like this - 2-3 hours to trace the people making the threats!

Just saw a section about this on midlands today (midlands news programme) as Collymore is from the midlands. Staffordshire police said they believe the majority of the abuse was from children.

Twitter should up their game and stamp it out, but don't you think kids in school should now be taught more about social media, how to behave online, etc in schools these days?

Maybe hard to stop this sort of thing though as anyone can go to an internet cafe, open an account there and send abuse, would be pretty hard to trace them?

I don't know how twitter works so googled the tweets and from what I can see he has copied them.

I am a great believer in not letting anything on the net ever get to me as they are just words on a screen and all over the net there are block vuttons for idiots .....but all I will say is WOW....why should anyone have to put up with those vile posts and why have Twitter not suspended the accounts

OP, can I ask a question: please can you name a public figure - anyone at all - that you admire, take inspiration from, respect, love, whatever. But just one will do.

Now replace their name with Stan's and see if you'd have this same amount of vitriol for them when talking about abuse etc.

He maybe a complete teat, he's not really my favourite person, but I can honestly sit here and say I would NOT accord him the treatment you seem to intimate he deserves.

Because the more accounts social media sites have the more money they make. And because now it's been floated on the stock exchange if they were to suspend every account that breached it's rules it would lose a lot of money.

That's why they take the piss when handling complaints. Wastebook works in the same sort of way.

I dint get how him hitting a woman rates to cyber bullying which is what this story is highlighting.

I'm pretty sure that he was investigated for that and so that particular part of his life was dealt with.

Stories like this are less about the person and more about the wider issue. Of a famous person admits to and stands up to and reports the issue it will encourage others to do the same.

Wether or not they are just words with no meaning or intent behind them is irrelevant. The fact is they are offensive and people need to be accountable for the things they say.

If I sat here and called you all the names under the sun every time you posted, threatening to come to your house and murder you for nothing more than your original post I would think that after enough time you'd be passed off.

It is obvious to me this is more about football than the tweets! The tweets are bad and Stan Collymore is dead right to highlight them, but that is not what I think the OP is getting at.

I think he just dislikes the guy for whatever reason and wanted to slate him. When it didn't work, he brought in the bit about "beating up women". Not just the once, but over and over!

There are a few others who are appearing to say he deserves it and I would guess he didn't play for "their" team!

I don't like or follow football, but I do believe we are ALL entitled to the protection of the law and those who supply us goods or services. Twitter has failed many people and bullying is rife. Who better to highlight that cause than someone with a colourful past?

Oh and on the subject of problem sorting.. I reported a profile on Facebook that was cloned from mine and it was gone in 24 hours!!

You've said a few bits for me to point out but talking about of is too a lot of effort.. What he has done in his past is wrong and what these people have done recently is also wrong. stan collymore has had abuse all his life about his race on the football pitch as I said that don't bother him he went in to a deep depression over the women beating I'm guessing he is using the racsist abuse so more people will not keep reminding him of bein a women beater

The whole problem with this issue is anonymity. The fact that anyone can say anything and hide behind their laptop, safe from any reprecussions.

We have seen on here that Collymore should 'man up' and just ignore the abuse but in reality it should be the trolls that 'man up' and voice their abuse personally. But that would mean coming out of the shadows and taking responsibility and more frighteningly for them, the possible consequences for what they have said.

Twitter should give out the details of IP addresses of trolls and that would stop all the abuse or they could get Curtis Woodhouse to call round and sort these vile individuals out.
