Ive a free day and wondered if its worth a whole day to watch all 3 in a row? Are they any good?

Depends if you feel like spending the next eleven hours or so watching half a dozen blokes doing bad Irish/Scottish/West Country accents while hiking around New Zealand.

Personally when I get the urge for some fantasy (non-pervy) I'd rather watch Princess Bride - much more fun!

But, I accept I'm probably in a minority here, given the number of Oscars the LOTR films won..

Its not that technical, just remember, if a character is

Male, ruggedly handsome, windswept and grimy then they're probably one of the good guys.

If they're ugly, have bad teeth, burning eyes and wield rusty, jagged weapons then they're most likely a baddie!

I'm not sure but think its something to do with Sauron had been looking for it for some time, finally traced it to the Shire, and only Frodo was pure enough to carry it from then on.

I like Willow more than the Princess Bride.

This is one of the problems with the movie. In the book it was months before Frodo left the Shire and there were lots of other things happening in the background leading up to Sauron finding out where the ring was.

Sometimes it's best NOT to have read a book before the movie...

I watched all 3 in one day years ago. Loved it. Why Frodo had to leave? I think the ring was lost for 100's of years got in the hands of the wee funny monster then the old Hobit had for 60 yeard but all that time the owner (Lord of the ring) was dormant since he lost his battle many generations ago. by the time Frodo carried the ring the king came back to life and was looking for his ring and preparing to invade the world.

I tried to read the books in the early 70s but gave up/in after number 1. Found it hard going. Did like The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, though.

As for the movies - the 70s cartoon version made me wary of the 2001 (and up) version, but I was gobsmacked. In a good way. And indeed Viggo...

I agree! And Oplevs version of the film runs rings around Finchers! A must watch for any woman in my opinion..!! (The dubbed version is very watchable too!) I'm to lazy for subs!

I think this was explained in one of the appendix, the eagles wouldn't get that involved in what they regarded the troubles of men and elves.

I could accept parts of the book being left out because of the length of it but not character assassinations. Als if you are going to omit an important story from the books because of time constraints I can't accept writing in totally new parts that take up the time that could have been given to the parts left out! (don't get me started...Middle Earth nerd alert!)

Because his omission detracted nothing

The events they went through in between leaving home and reaching Bree, when they met Bombadil, explained how they could cope when the Black Riders caught up with them. Without that part they were just little country Hobbits that somehow survived an attack most men and elves wouldn't. (so there!)

I cant read.. just simply dont enjoy it. I got through 2 chapters of 50 shades of grey before i gave up.

Used to love it at school. My mum grandma and brother are all bookworms.. i just lost my passion for it. Love picture books though and read them lol

I cant read.. just simply dont enjoy it. I got through 2 chapters of 50 shades of grey before i gave up.

The films are great, the books are even better!

I read the books once a year and we watch all three films in one sitting once a year...takes about 15 hours with lunch, dinner, fag and piss breaks
