Allow someone to help you or allow someone to know you wanted to end your life due to an illness??? Do you think euthnasia should become legal here??

it is a difficult one. i do believe in self determination, a persons right to choose when to end their life however assisted suicide is a minefield of legalities.

Personally i dont think i could ask someone to put themselves in a position of risk to help me end my life. If i want to end it that s my decision. I would hate for anyone i loved to be placed at risk of prosecution following my death

My best friend has paid to go to Switzerland to end her life when the C gets too much and I would do the same. It's a pity we can't do it in this Country and yes I would tell a friend if I planned to do it. I did volunteer to go with my best friend if she goes through with it as would never let her go alone. She has even visited the place and discussed how it all works and said the place is beautiful.

Yes but I appreciate the complexity in allowing this and other peoples views. It's a very big grey area and I think people could easily start citing examples that many of us wouldn't be comfortable with.

In the context of the "Corrie" episode tonight I'd say yes. I watched my father wait his death out in similar circumstances. Not nice I think given choice he might have elected a time himself.

I do believe we should have the choice to pull they plug.

My kids have already been told to take me to switzerland on a skiing trip. Obviously I do not expect them to administer the dose.

Maybe by the time my choice has to be made we will have the law changed in UK.

Its difficult to say whether right or wrong,its down to the individuals choice...if there in so much pain and its terminal then surely its for them and them only to decide...

I lost my dad just over a year ago and he suffered soo much in the last 6 months ,he said many times he didn't want to be here any longer and to see him suffer was tragic....

I have a living will in case I'm incapacitated and cannot communicate. Otherwise, I know exactly what I would do, I have a plan that doesn't rely on asking anyone else to risk their liberty.

I won't be able to do it. I'm a sensitive soul..that'd be too much to handle.

...i'd always be there for people. Sacrifice my own time for them - but, i won't be able to do that.

we have just gone through something similar before xmas as mrs dees nan was suffering for a bout 2 weeks before dieing bless her and we both said that if you can stop a pet from suffering by being able to put the pet down surely you should be able to stop your loved family members from suffering so yes we are firm believers that you should have the right be able to stop the suffering x

This is sooo hard. And so damn close to my heart. I work in an environment, where I see so many people at the end of their lives. I see suffering and pain, I see a light go out in someone, they get that look that says ive have had enough.. Let me go..I have sat with people who have given up on life.... I have hugged and cried with them, and sobbed my heart out when ive come home..And been genuinely distraught! I have talked with families that want to cling on to the person they love as long as they can.. When it's been discussed again and again to not resuscitate. Sometimes I do wish it was available... When I'm looking at please help me eyes... But who are we to play god.... Although I am doubting my faith at the moment! but that's a whole different ball game... At home when someone I loved was suffering damn right I'd do it in a heartbeat. No hesitation.

My dad was 40 when I was born so consequently, an old man when I was still a young woman. He couldn't bear the thought of reverting to being cared for like a baby and would ask me often to 'put a pillow over my face'. I avoided a detailed conversation and watched him get sicker and sicker as the years went on.

His eventual death was a horrid affair, he would have suffered terribly and I still don't know if I could have done it. What botheres me more is I wasn't with him. I wish I could have just been there to love him as he went.

Had this discussion many times with people who i know, and who have every reason to be thinking ahead to this. I am uncomfortable with it if honest.. Not i add , due to the fact we all should be able to choose if in that position . More to fact of being in others hands? For example, who is too say great Aunt Molly is a total pain in the arse... Has been on every ones case for years, she also has a progressive illness and also happens to be extreamly rich! ...Things in this world are never always as they seem, when this subject crops up , its human nature for emotions on high levels to surface. However how would the 'real cases' be monitored from the rest? No one can really say this wouldn't opens the flood gates to abuse in some ways .. Can they?? What if you were diagnosed with a progressive illness tomorrow? Would you live life to the full best you can? Or start planning your suicide now? My point being , none of this is clear cut is it?? S .... who is thinking outside the box

Euthanasia is allowed in animals. So why not humans as aren't we all animals anyway. Just with differences?

I think it should be made legal and lots of people are going to prison from it. Despite the victim saying its ok and they want their help, etc.

It maybe easier said than done for various reasons, but if it was up to me. I would rather drop dead somewhere and then people say "he had cancer". Rather than getting told I have weeks/months to live and then me and everyone I know suffering for that length of time. Would rather enjoy my life and just go. Dying of cancer to me isn't the hard bit as we all have to go sometime and unfortunately sometimes it happens to the young ones. Knowing about it in advance is the hard bit as how would you feel knowing your dying, a loved is or you having to tell someone the news that you are? Its a lot easier just live life and enjoy it. Rather than know about it in advance.

Short answer Yes. Saw my mum die last April. Brain tumour. Longest fortnight of my life. Where theres life theres hope they say well, not in that case and if it was me I would just rather go with some tranquiliser.....

Definitely not for me to help someone ending their life nor it is for me to end mine. I didnt bring myself to life and existance. I beleive in the skies and its for the one who brought me to existance to decide. Its already decided and I wont be the cause of my own end. No matter how I suffer at the end. Its part of life to suffer and I will accept my share of it and praise for the good part I had.

I would not ask anyone to help, wouldn't want to put them in that position. But I would happily refuse any life extending treatment with poor quality of life at the end of it, and MAY in exceptional circumstances if I could do it myself choose my exit time.

Personally for me I would not ask my family to help as I would not put them through the aftermath. Questions / investigations would be asked at a time when they are at their most vulnerable. There are excellent palliative care services available, this is the route I would choose.

I would not promote legalising euthanasia because I feel the risk for abuse is too high. I feel by making the act easier, there would be a risk of euthanasia being highlighted as an option for terminally ill patients when otherwise it wouldn't have been considered.

When the ultimate decision is made, a patient may not be able to give that final consent and the onus would fall to close relatives and those relatives may not always have the best interests of the patient in mind.

It is easy to make such emotional gestures of freedom of choice, a quick end to suffering for our loved ones, but the complexities in reality are too high.

And I certainly wouldn't go abroad to another country to end my life, I would want to have the comfort of my home country, when the roots of my life have been laid, the familiarity of home, family etc
