"Hahaha. Yeah. 5 grand in kit, 2 grand in software and around 20 years worth of on the job training. Still learning though!!! I think I speak for most pro's in saying we're a bit anal when it comes to perfection!!!" Too bloody right...5 grand in bodies, 12 grand on lenses, a grand on Speedlites, a couple of grand on studio lighting. It soon adds up! To answer the original question, if I shoot 300 images of a model, maybe 10 will make the cut. The ratio probably doubles if it's a live band shoot. Model shots get post-processed properly, band shots get the levels adjusted a little and cropped properly.

"Back in the day (god I sound old), I had an Zenith SLR I bought for £5. The lens again I bought cheaply and took some fantastic pictures. The expensive camera & lens are just slightly better quality and will hopefully last longer. It is knowing how to frame the picture, where the light is coming from and how best to use it. Only good thing I find is you get to see the picture you took right away instead of waiting for the film to be developed." And I thought I was a dinosaur with my old Nikon FT!! .......but digital is definitely better!!

"You misunderstand photoshop. Noo...... I have seen pictures in raw format then enhanced, I just don't believe you can still it a photograph when an image has been digitally altered, " You misunderstand Photoshop completely. A decent retoucher will often only get a model looking the way she looked in real life. Certain lighting techniques accentuate lines in the skin, causing shadows. She doesn't look like this in real life, Photoshop can restore that, the same as processing techniques for film could. Apart from anything else, do you really think that images in the pre-digital age weren't touched up? Where do you think terms like, for instance, Mask, Dodge, Burn, Cross Process and Bleach Bypass come from? I have a book about the making of Breakfast in Tiffany's which has some before and after shots(the before has the editors notes all over it of the changes he wants making) of Audrey Hepburn, possibly one of the most classically beautiful women to ever draw breath. The difference is stark! A raw file is just an unprocessed image, straight out of the camera, most JPEGS will look better than a raw image (what you see on the back if the camera when you shoot in raw is a JPEG). Try shooting raw whilst applying B&W in camera, the resulting raw file will be in colour, only the JPEG is B&W!

True but I would expect on a site like this people want to escape reality and have their images enhanced to help with the whole process of promoting themselves... sometimes there is a balance between reality and how we as individuals want to see ourselves as. As someone above said, tis what the client wants that is important to a photographer. NB: There is much more to being a good pro than just taking good images... much much more!

"Got a friend who's just bought a new camera she's sells by me her old one, I just googled the new one she's getting abd it came up with some of the accessories, some lenese are over 1300! I asked her why do people spend Soo much on lenses lighting cameras ect and then just Photoshop the images anyway?? She's a prime one for it, I took hundreds of images on her camera of my daughter's birthday and about 12 made the cut, are all photographers such perfectionists?" The quality (read standard) of an artist whether songwriter, poet or photographer etc can be judged by the volume of the wastepaper basket. Snapshots for memories can be out of focus but for quality work then only the best should be good enough!

Oh, I can Photoshop the shit out of an image, if required! Thanks for telling me how to do my job though, much appreciated

" ...Thanks for telling me how to do my job though, much appreciated..." oh who is touchy and your not reading my post correctly... I was only agreeing with your post and highlighting that on here some will want a completely unrealistic approach to images... My last comment was aimed at some above who were questioning the fact it appears to be a good photographer only needs to take excellent images - if you miss-understood that and that was because of what I typed then apologies. PS: There is more than you a photographer on here... keep well

"For the purpose of this site I think photos need to provide an honest reflection of how people look. People looking at their best perhaps, but not distorted beyond recognition. Otherwise you're likely to meet up with a lot of people who won't take their interest any further." Your probably right but there is nothing wrong with a little enhancement in images... even if that is only the lighting being more appealing which in turn makes us more attractive to the viewer of the image

" I'm pretty much done with it now anyway, other than Motorsport jobs in the summer, the odd bit of product photography and model shoots when I'm asked (and fucking weddings when I absolutely can't get out of it!). Too busy studying and every man and his dog is a 'photographer' now, so there's very little money in it! A big change from 6 or 7 years ago. Plus, I'm desperately looking for my mojo again!
