What works for you?

To lose weight?

Cos I've got at least a stone to lose so I've decided to use a diet that's worked for me in the past. But it will mean some cold turkey

I'll be giving up wheat (all bread, cakes and pasta along with all the things that go on them) potatoes, dairy and red meat.

Chicken, turkey and fish are allowed as is rice. After that it's lots of fruit and veg and pulses.

Once the first week is over it's surprisingly easy to stick to with a little forethought.

So what works for you? How long does it take for the cravings to pass?

I'm trying to tone my muscles so hope to put on muscle weight. Protein drinks and exercise is what I'm trying to do. I am so de-motivated though, it's hard. I need to build my stamina levels up too so I can do runs in the summer.

Eat less, portion wise, and exercise more.

Also drink less alcohol.

I went back to Weight Watchers Wednesday night as it's worked for me in the past. They have a new plan now though which mean's you don't have to weigh or count anything for the first two weeks, as long as you stick to the items on the free list. I've cut out all snacks and just eating three meals a day. I'm coping ok at the moment!

If the stuff that you crave isnt in the house you can't eat it .. Plus training yourself to eat when hungry.. ( We often eat, for comfort, bordom etc) Yes sounds mad but really works ( often also its said we are infact thirsty not always hungry... So have a drink first) does this work? Yeap! Did for me plus swimming regular ... Must do that again

Don't have anything bad in the house, it's the only thing that works for me. I only have to have will power when I go to the shops, once I'm back home I'm safe from temptation.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

A low carb, ketogenic diet works for me for several reasons.

I run really well on ketones. As long as I get the vitamins and minerals I need, and plenty of water, I feel energetic and physically really well on it. My mood is often more stable. My skin is often less dry and sensitive too. Once I've been in ketosis for a couple of weeks, I don't get hungry.

The only drawbacks are that I have the standard ketosis breath, I get cold easily and much more severely and it makes lunch/dinner/nights out tricky, (I'm not sure what I'm going to do at Xtasia yet. I might be on mineral water and not able to eat anything).

Oh and because estrogen is stored in fat cells, as they shrink, it's released and it can cause spotting and breakthrough bleeding. That's annoying.

It also works because it's easy - very little weighing or measuring. It breaks my carb addiction. It suits my "all or nothing"ness too. I can't do moderation. I can't have one biscuit; I eat the packet, for example. Ketogenic diets mean if I cheat I'm set back at least 3-4 days. That encourages me to stick to it.

The first few days are very difficult and the first couple of weeks aren't easy but after that, it gets much easier.

Results can be fast, depending on calorie intake too. Seeing results early on is encouraging.

I also enjoy pissing on sticks and seeing them turn purple

I have recently started dieting I have cut out nearly all fats, sugary drinks and snacks, changed to whole grain for bread and rice, cut my calories by 1000 and swapped for a healthier option regarding dairy. I have been doing this along with my exercises and drinking LOTS of water for a week it is hard to keep up when people are eating crisps and chocolate in front of me but the results are showing very quickly. I'm not weighing my self either I'm taking a picture every four weeks.

Limited carbs, only have them for breakfast, and dinner.

No fruit, lots of protein, I'm currently eating 3 main meals and 2 snacks daily.

I've lost a stone over 5 weeks.

In moderation, diced with a salad or in an omelette is ok. Good for calcium. It's easy to not get enough calcium when dieting.

It's usual to get headaches when cutting out sugar, carbs in general and/or caffeine. Drinking plenty of water helps. It should pass in 2-3 days.

I did for the first two days but I was doing it all wrong anyway, I ate 600 calories each day when I told my sister about this (who is a fitness fanatic) she told me if I carried on eating so little calories I would enter starvation mode and become very ill. She has now helped me with my dietary needs and I am absolutely fine

Do you want to lose weight or burn fat they are two total differnt things.

To burn fat. Cut out sugar. As the body stores this and that turns into ur love handles. If you want to weight then exercise and a balanced diet is the key. Start by eating smaller portions.

If you want any help message me and I can try and help

I read up on the science behind food combining diets like Slimming World recently because I didn't understand thow it worked.

I'm a scientist by education and training so the "how stuff works" aspect and learning about the relevant metabolic pathways is fascinating. Far more interesting than actually dieting.

I'm sure there's a lot we still don't understand about diet, nutrition and metabolism yet.
