Am I missing something here

Just been to the shops to get some bits . The bill came up to £17 . I went to put my card in and enter my pin number and the lady said "You dont have to do that " Apparently because its under £20 I can just lay my card on the top of the machine and it reads it !!! My question is ... That means anyone could take my card and go into numerous shops and as long as they don't spend any more then £20 in each shop.. They can get buy them without a pin number or signature . Surely thats a backward step

In security . Or .am I missing something here

Yes, contactless payments of £20 and under are available without pin numbers.

You also have to be careful that if you have more than one card you use the one you intend to use as the payment may come off another card.

Search contactless cards for the discussion that the forum had about this last year.

Yeah, contactless payment for items below £20!

It's the 3 little lines on your card that shows if you have the ability or not. Most new cards issues have the ability.

Good point with the security though

Ive used it quite a few times. Theres a daily limit so you cant just keep using it in shop after shop.

Apparently you can only do a few transactions before it will ask for your pin again. Not sure how many though, if they send me one next time I'll ask for one without.

True . But even 40 or 60 pounds out your bank each day before you realise would be gutting xx

Yes but it's to speed things up and is seen as behaving the same as paying with cash without the need to bank money each night.

You can ask for a card without the facility.

The cards have like a little wifi symbol on them, they can be cloned by somebody walking past with a reader. Wrap then in tinfoil

The contactless machines have the symbol on them as do the cards. You can still insert the card and use your pin, I believe. Moneybox covered this last year.

I think when you ask for or get sent a new card it has this facility . Not quite sure about it though xx

I think there's something you can put on your phone with certain banks which allows you to make a contactless payment with your mobile!

I think that in America cards come in little foil lined wallets to prevent them being read in your pocket.

Yes, that's possible too and is being rolled out as a way of paying for things like street food or things in markets in some trendy places in London.
