Historically, politicians of some note have been absolute sods. Didn't stop them being effective in their position. What's changed is media coverage. 50 years ago, this would not have been in the news.

Also, the French, generally, don't seem to be as puritanical as we.

Yes. I'm not overly bothered about individual's morality (within the law) but when there's an attempt to impose it on others, that's unacceptable in my book.
