Recieved an amazing present Friday m a friend, it's a metal plectrum with my alter ego 'cap'in Jay' inscribed on it, (came top of present list along with my holy frail black night in which the limbs come off - amazing!!) Bit yeah any other guitar players played with a solid metal plectrum, (acoustic) and can you notice the difference? I certainly can!

I've played with coins before, usually go without though and I only play rhythm guitar, so I've got an odd shaped callous on top of my index finger, as I use the same action add I would if I had a plectrum but with my fingers instead...hurts quite a lot sometimes!

Metal plectrums are less than useless. Nice gifts, can be made into jewellery or something but if you use it for playing you'll be spending a lot of money on strings.

I only play with 'the meat' but practice with plecs now & again but find metal ones a bit 'strident' for my ears

Tried a sixpence couldn't get on with it but I'm not Brian May. I use old credit cards and have a punch that cuts em out. They are quite thin but not too bendy. Just right for me. The pressed lettering gives a good grip too and you can either rough em up for the sixpence effect or rub smooth with a bit of emery paper. Takes about 5 seconds to make one.

I have tried a metal plectrum and coin in the past but I really don't have the lightness of touch to make them work for me, Dunlop Nylon 0.73's work for me.

Yeah, I heard he was currently touring, playing the entire Roxy & Elsewhere album, to celebrate 40 years since its release. The Zappa/Mothers band of that era has got to be my favourite, especially George Duke, who sadly died last year.

I was tempted to get tickets to the recent 200 Motels performance in London, but couldn't justify the cost.

I use Jim Dunlop nylons as I have a habit of breaking plastic ones. Green heavy ones for electric and thinner red ones for acoustic.

Bloody expensive tickets for what us effectively a tribute band though

As much as I love Eddie Van Halen, Dweezil plays Eruption better than he has in 30yrs!

Dweezil has loads of Eddie's old guitars. Recently on Dweezil's website we discovered that he has Ed's old 'Rasta' guitar and it turns out that guitar started out life as the 'Unchained', the story goes that Dweezil was up at 5150 and found the body behind an amp and Ed just gave it to him!

Another great thing about Dweezil is that he actively talks with his fans on the site and even sells his guitars to them, a mate of mine has the Zappa-caster, the white Strat he plays on the first ZPZ DVD.

As for plectrums, I tend to use Dunlop nylons .78's I have a really aggressive right hand and tend to snap other types, they also stand up to pick slides much better too...

i prefered softer ones when i played

metal styles are better with harder picks

an old mate played with a 2p piece, didnt do him any harm, one of the top execs in the music biz now
