First you need to adjust the rear brakes at the wheel, then move on to the cable adjuster if it still needs it. It is usually enough at the wheel. Or get someone else to do it....

There a a bunch of VDub fanatics that will pay far too much money for an S Reg Polo, so yes

Anyone who has on - look out for local kids with beanie hats - they will buy them off you to look uber cool

"Thanks had heard it was under the rear ashtray."

The cable adjuster is only to take up the free play, you should have the rear brakes looked at and adjusted, then the cable retensioned, if you just adjust the cable till the brake is OK then you may cause rapid wear to the rear brakes

Broken down twice in 4 years with two jobs costing 30 quid.

Owned a brand new Corsa that cost me a wee small fortune especially 250 quid for a clutch.

So yes its worth 35 quid for the handbrake on a reliable car

If I remember correctly it will have disc brakes on the rear of the passat so ots possible that the calipers have siezed up. Best to get someone to look at them

The breaks are fine, he mentioned the handbrakes were only working at 20% at the MOT

IF it passed MOT, not a problem, just keep 2 housebricks in footwell and use them if you park on a hill, I usually keep my handbrake on at all times, , always forget to take it off...

IIRC Passats have a cable mechanism on the caliper for the handbrake, which is possibly starting to seize or partially siezed cables. for the MOT the efficiency for the hand brake only needs to be 16%, but it I would advise that you get someone to look at it. adjusting the cable will not increase the brakes efficiency

Leave it in gear as well, till it's fixed. Just don't forget to remember!
