CV advice

After finding myself without any work after xmas for the first time in many years I am in the process of sending off my CV to future employers, i compiled my first ever CV myself which i thought was OK but also got a friend to look at who is good at these things, they edited it but when i was reading it back it didn't seen like me at all in the way i would write something so i have stuck with my original effort for the time being.

So my question is really is it better to be yourself on a CV or how you want to be perceived?

I think it is important to be yourself as long as you tick enough boxes to fit most skill sets. There are exceptions. If you are a nut job, then don't try to be yourself.....

One piece of advice, ensure that your CV is not too long. 2 pages at the most is good.

Never put dangerous sports in your interests or things likly to cause injury. As there is possibility of being off work through injury.

I am only apply for one type of job so I think it's ok at the moment, if in time I have to look for something alternative I will definitely take your advice, thank you.

Short profile, filled by key skills and qualifications, then work history, try to include key achievements in your roles, references if you can. Like stated tailor your profile to the job sector. Always include covering letter too. Important is punctuation, spelling and use a professional font (lettering). Think you know all this already but hope it helps.

Not sure of your profession but check out a website called 'business balls'.

Gives a pretty in-depth run through of CVs, cover letters and much more.

When it comes to writing about your past jobs, be sure to list accomplishments not just a duty list.

What sounds better:

Accepted deliveries into the warehouse

Or

Worked with my supervisor to slimline the delivery process through better organisation of the paperwork.

Everyone knows what certain jobs involve, potential employers want to know what you did.

Thanks for all your replies and great advice

And thank you very much serendipity28 for such a kind offer, it's early days yet so I'll stick with what I've got for now and see how things go but I may take you up on it in the near future
