Why do we get on a bus but in a taxi?

(Stolen from twitter, but it's a good question.)

Its because of your own actions, how you enter the transport....you 'walk on' a bus...

Here and there

You board a bus, or a train, or a plane, or a ship. If you are on board then you are "on" rather than "in"

Originally, buses were open top, so you boarded it or got on it.

Brighton - even Hove!

This. The steps were open as was the top, so there was nothing to get in...one had to get on. The original name was Omnibus.
