ive just paid £130 for 6 months tax. YES 6 MONTHS! i really dont know how they justify the amount they charge for road tax.

it was supposed to be £118, but it went up today, so if id have gone yesterday id have saved a tenner which was an extra kick in the bollocks

weve a few cars and these days only keep 2 of them taxed at a time as its so costly to keep all 4 of them on the road..

the range rover hse 4.2 sports cost an arm and a leg to tax...but we need it as we live high up on the yorks moors so comes in handy

the bmw m5 we also need as its nice to but that maybe put in the garage for a while..xxxx

next time record the potholes and claim from the council.

They have a special fund to pay for your damages, its cheeper than repairing the roads because most people dont claim.

Ie's simple economics you know!

Unfortunately, payment of the VED is not ring-fenced for the upkeep of the roads. Your Council Tax is actually where the money for highways maintainance is taken, that's why you can claim of the Local Authority if your vehicle is damaged due to a lack of maintainance.

You can also only claim if you can prove that the Council knew about the pothole and didn't do anything to fix it in a reasonable amount of time. So most claims don't get approved anyway

1960's series II swb don't go mud plugging in it but do tend to use it as a self propelled skip at times.

The Pothole Problem...

use, www.fixmystreet.com

to report the pothole problems you come across.... you make a note of it on the map & it`s reported automatically to the council concerned for that area... once a pothole has been reported, any damage to your car can be claimed for on the councils insurance...

I was amazed at how much cheaper it was to tax my new 1.8 deisel C-Max than my previous 2 litre sporty car. I phoned the dealer back an said "You've made a mistake I want a year's tax NOT 6 months". He replied that is was a year and deisels are cheaper to tax.

i dont know why they can charge the amount of money for road tax as the roads are a total joke with potholes ect.

i drove along a road near east kilbride 2 weeks ago and the road had totally broken up. and lo and behold there were 2 council workers picking what parts to sort. the road is now that bad they have closed it due to the amount of claims that were being sent in. so roadtax where do they spend it as its not near me

Sorry, but the money raised by VED is not collected for the roads - it hasn't been since 1937!

Our roads are funded (at least in part) by our Council Tax so has to struggle with all the other demands on local authority funding.

VED money goes straight into general taxation and pays for the NHS/Afghanistan/Social Security etc.

"So if VED wasn't collected for the roads since 1937, why was it called the 'Road Fund Licence' long long after that ??

Bad terminology quite simply.

Winston Churchill moaned about the idea of a 'road tax' in 1926/7 saying that if people thought they were paying for the roads they would think they own it!

There hasn't been a direct link between 'car tax' and road funding since 1937.
