Rugby is a bit of a minority game in this country. More people watch and play football. A lot of footballers are tossers though. I don't think one is better than the other but football is more pleasing on the eye to me.

southern hemisphere teams disprove that .... they prefer gamesmanship and there is as much foulplay in rugby football as there is in football in the game altogether

Rugby for me but not sure why there has to be a constant comparison ? They're different games with different skills. Does make me laugh when some of the rugby brigade get hung up on then being mens men. Plenty of tenacious characters play no sport atall.

I used to play League back in the day - it became briefly popular in the south along with the creation of the Broncos etc (my fam are from Salford - supporting them is quite a thankless task). Play union now, but I'm pushing on a bit.....specially since I seem to be on the wing cos they teach League players to run....

Well rugby started from football they both play on similar pitches both have an offside rule they are kind of similar! It's just an age old rivalry thought it would make for some good discussion is all, there was no "who's more manly?" About it just to see which people preffered

There is so many differences from how the players conduct themselves on the pitch. There is a respect in Rugby that puts Football to shame. The abuse footballers give referees. Then there's the whole rolling around pretending to be injured crap every 2 mins amd diving..god it angers me watching it sometimes.

Plus Rugby is just more manly. Nothing better than seeing someone get nailed in a tackle or a move played to perfection with a try in the corner....

It's seems to be more of the rugby fans playing the "man's game" card. Maybe a little jealous of football's international appeal?

I played both and was immediately drawn to football as it catered to more of my strengths. I agree that football can learn a lot from Rugby in terms of sportsmanship but they not exactly angels are they?

Well put it this way,

Was in a Bar In Aussie for the 2003 world cup.

placed was packed maybe 20 brits 200 aussies. when we won, they got us all drinks and chatted, said we where crap at swimming, football(they had just beaten us at that) and of course cricket. If that had been a football match in England and the other way round, I'm pretty sure they would not been treated so well.

Rugby.

When people call rugby a man's game they should rephrase it 'gentleman's game' instead. Rugby is a game for gentlemen, football for insolent children. As players as well as supporters. Ever been to a rugby international? 70k plus supporters, no segregation, bars in the ground open, lots of drinking, passionate fans, no fighting, no mass brawls etc. After the game opposing fans meet in bars, discuss the game, sing songs and drink heavily. Fighting is usually reserved for incidents over ladies and spilt drinks. Rugby is civilised off the pitch because the violence is ON the pitch. Players are respectful to the ref because if they're not they find themselves not playing for 10 mins in the sinbin. Footballers shame themselves every time the abuse the ref verbally, there's no discipline in the game, on the terraces, even from the management or owners. Too much money has made football worthless morally. The so called Beautiful Game is as ugly as hell.

I didn't realise fighting over women was a gentlemanly think to do. All those nutters in town on a Saturday night are proper gentleman then. And fighting over spilt drinks is very childish. But I won't judge all rugby fans from the mindless idiots that you have just described.

It's not very often you can describe rugby supporters out on the town as 'nutters' - in your area of norf lundun maybe its wasps or saracens? I can't speak on behalf of either clubs fans but I'd say its more likely their tottenham, arsenal or west ham fans not rugby ones. Fighting over ladies and spilt drinks is a common occurrence in any pub in any town regardless of game supported. It was more to point out that the supporters VERY rarely fight over the game or club itself. Where, I would point out, that its a common theme amongst footie supporters worldwide. Go to Poland or South America and murder is a common at footie games. Sneaking guns into the ground and shooting at players caused games to be called off in Argentina last year due to the risk involved.

I've been to dozens of international rugby games, hundreds of premier club games and thousands of local games and have yet to see a fight over the game or club itself. I've sat next to English/Irish/Scottish/French supporters at games and generally the worst you'll hear is swearing at a game-play but if someone shouted abuse at a player or ref EVERYONE around would be quick to shhh that person down. There's no room for bad sportmanship from players OR supporters at a game. Maybe I'm over romanticising it a bit but generally speaking, Rugby supporters are a class above football supporters in terms of behaviour.

No, you offered a good debate, however, even though I've always played rugby and followed it, I'm always aware of the derogatory references to footballers being girls blouses, and softies. Yes a lot of it is banter, but any sport requires skills and fitness ( oh ok apart from golf & darts

Most sport is interesting in its own way, though whilst there are similarities, ie grass pitch, bunch of players....that's where it ends.

And you know what, that's good in my book. Love the variety and besides my ageing body can't take knocks anymore so I need something else !

Rugby violence or just d*unken thugs ?same goes with football fans. Real fans don't smash up the terraces. Idiots behaving like that would perform without football or sport in general. They just use it as an excuse.

There is cheating in all sports. Very few incidents in Rugby. Think the recent news with regards match fixing in football should be worth a good read. Seeing that you're being highly selective in your accusations!!

There's corruption in every sport too!

It's a case of agree to disagree. But if you really want to argue which one is better, reasons would have to be logical.

Which sport dominates the back pages of most newspapers up and down the country? Football.

Which sport bankrolls the most and attracts the most sponsorship? Football.

Which sport is recognised as the national sport? Football.

Which sport encourages people of all shapes and sizes to come and play? (I say people as the women's game is fast becoming more popular) Football.

You don't have to like it and I agree with you on certain points that football must deal with...but you do have to accept certain facts.

I wasn't being selective, the thread is about football and rugby. You slated football I retorted. And since you mentioned being selective maybe you shouldn't limit your reading on match fixing to football. There are plenty of instances of match fixing in rugby, even as high as the World Cup.

do you mean the rugby players punching shit out of each other regularly in mass brawls on and off the field? or the northampton captain being red carded in last seasons cup final for extreme abuse directed at the referee? or faking blood injuries to get a substitution advantage or keeping quiet when the ref has made a mistake by allowing 16 men to be on the pitch at the same time and you think someone nailing another player by clothes lining them is acceptable? what about the countless incidents of international and club rugby players attacking members of the public on trains or in bars etc. not to mention the antics on tour in australian nightclubs and swimming pools of hotels or even driving golf carts down the M4 pissed off their faces ..... wise up .... rugby players and their fans think thuggery is acceptable as long as it is not footballers or football fans perpertrating these nefarious activities
