Has anyone been on those Sun holidays? What are they like?

I am thinking about going on one with a friend and her daughter.

i think my mum booked our holiday to Whitstable with it last year. Went to a Park Resorts caravan park. We had to have a bronze van cos she took her (stupid) dog with us but the van was lovely. Very clean and the staff were helpful and friendly.

We're doing one of those this year for the first time as we'll have a newborn and won't want to be travelling far.

I know a few people who've gone on them and said they're great.

For the money, you can't really grumble can you? (although don't forget the better dates are £15 and that's per person - min booking for 4 people, then there are service charges and entertainment passes for some parks)

Would rather go somewhere that doesn't attract people who would pay less than a tenner to go on holiday. Did it once, never again.

The European sites are great. There's a different attitude to camping and caravanning in continental Europe.

You can get 7 days at the European sites.

But treat it as camping with a roof, a cooker and a bathroom and you'll have fun.

If taking kids pick sites with lots of kids stuff. If just adults then pic sites near things/places you want to go to.

My Own Little World

We have gone on these Sun holidays a few time, not a a main hol but as a few days away with the kids and never had a problem, nice caravans, clean, dry and warm.

Just be warned though, read the small print,

There are load of extra charges which differ from company and loction,

Bedding - you can take your own sheets n towels.

Gas, Elec & Water

Entertainment passes - Haven normally do free passes so that can save you £10 per person.

So it won't cost £9.50 a person but I think a 5 day break for 2 adults & 2 kids for £100 is a decent deal.

Ok so it's not for you bit no need to be so derisive about the prospect. For some it's the only way they can afford to take their family on holiday and that time together means a lot to them.

If the independent or telegraph did the same offer would you go?

I went a couple of years ago to dawlish sands with an ex, his daughter (9), and one of my nieces (7). We upgraded and with service charges and club passes it was almost £200 for the break but 4 nights for 4 I'd say was still pretty good. The kids had a blast. We went on the £15 break and it was a little quieter. If you've got children a bit older I'd try and get the haven camps as there is usually more to do at them.

ive been on a parkdeane holiday, hoseasons and a butlins break. Butlins by far was the best for my child (aged 4)

its unlikely any of those places will offer breaks for £9.50.. but check the local area's out where the accommodation is available.

We've been on a couple of these, but never again. If you're a big fan of kids running around screaming from dawn 'til dusk, and hearing their d*unk parents bellowing at them, then these holidays are for you. If not, there are some great sites which are adults only, but you usually have to be a member of one of the caravan clubs (and many of these sites allow tents).

Don't want to knock you off your soap box but the richest person in our house hold is our daughter who got £20 for christmas. Would rather get the tent out and go camping for a week. If you dress like a sack of potatoes people will treat you as one. Unfortunately the holiday we experienced was ruined by people treating it like a £10 holiday, no respect for anything or anyone.

"Never been on one or looked into it all before - how does it work?

You collect the tokens printed every day in the paper.

Once you have ten you either fill out the coupon from the paper or you go online to book.

People who have hooked before have a code to book earlier than those who haven't.

Some sites you have to pay for entertainment passes some you don't. Some also charge a fee for utilities.

There is a wide selection of sites but UK and Europe. You can also get a ferry deal for the European ones.

If you have pre school age children and can book holidays during term time you will have a wider selection. They are either Friday to Monday or Monday to Friday.

For most caravan holidays sheets and towels are not supplied unless you pay extra - I take my own in the UK but get them supplied when I go abroad. Like any self catering holiday you'll need to take/buy loo roll, toiletries, tea towels, washing up liquid, bin bags and obviously any food. On site shops in the UK sites are generally overpriced so I'd suggest taking your own or either do a supermarket run or place an online order before you go.

The entertainment and restaurants onsite can also be a bit hit and miss and the food is sometimes pricey.

Like any holiday it is what you make it. If you can avoid half term and Easter then you're more likely to have a peaceful holiday without d*unken neighbours. But I've been 5* and also stayed in the cheapest campsites and had d*unken neighbours at all levels.

If you have small children who will want to be in the pool all day pick a site with those facilities. If you have your own transport then go for one near interesting places or a beach - many of the coastal sites have direct beach access so always check tripartite or just Google the site name before you decide.

This year I'm thinking the Lido direct Jesolo just outside Venice. Or possibly Sardinia again. I know quite a few people who like the French ones they can drive to even though it's a bit of a journey.

Don't know if this will help anyone, but having just booked a Haven break and being a non-driver (making it very hard to take any meaningful amount of food) I was wondering about it costing a fortune to buy food on site as I know the Spar shops are overpriced and the bar meals aren't cheap either. Turns out tesco/asda etc do their grocery delivery to most Haven sites, just put the postcode in to check. Will make my life much easier!

Have never been one

And documentary they made last year specifically about these holidays did put me off ever doing one. The perception I got was that they attempt to get you in, hoping you'll see the state of the room and upgrade

I think in one cabin there were no curtains and it took a day or so for them to put some 'nice' colour ones up that went with the co-ordination of the rest of the cabin

I'm not being a snob, I've just never bothered because I just think I'll be given a date when I'll be unable to make it, similar to the Alton towers tickets etc etc

I have never been on one but have started collecting the tokens today and going to give it a go.

I expect its a good way for British holiday companies to ensure they fill their parks for the whole season rather than let accommodation stay vacant and theyll make money by people spending on site. It is no different than cheap package holiday sites like On the beach or cheap airlines.

It will be 4 days of my life, I wont stay on site 24/7, I can drive around and enjoy nearby areas, it will be a nice break, if I hate it so much I can go home.

I expect ill have a good time though, I have realistic expectations and im quite laid back

"Don't know if this will help anyone, but having just booked a Haven break and being a non-driver (making it very hard to take any meaningful amount of food) I was wondering about it costing a fortune to buy food on site as I know the Spar shops are overpriced and the bar meals aren't cheap either. Turns out tesco/asda etc do their grocery delivery to must Haven sites, just put the postcode in to check. Will make my life much easier!

I know the haven site we're off too has a bus stop onsite that takes you to town centre and stops at places like the asda etc on-route

Might be worth looking on the site info or calling them to see what public transport they have nearby and where it goes

I've been to it before and used the bus so am fine in that regard, it was just the getting food there that worried me as my aunt drove us last year with everything.

Really looking forward to it

The spar shop wasn't too expensive, not much more than what you would pay at any other spar I think"

I suppose not but I wouldn't fancy doing my shopping for the best part of a week from what they have on offer

"Has anyone been on those Sun holidays? What are they like?

I am thinking about going on one with a friend and her daughter.

"

They are great, it does work out more with extras but the ones we have been on have always been clean.

It can be basic but its still great value for the money, with extra charges for laundry, sheets, club ticket etc its about £60.

We have stayed in worse places in Cap D'agde so don't let anyone put you off...have fun x

We went on one a couple of years ago, we were very sceptical.

We thought it would be like carry on camping, we were very surprised, the caravan was lovely, site was good, entertainment good, all in all an excellent short break.

Going on another one this year, well worth it. Xx

These holidays are fine during the day but if like me you fancy a couple of pints in the club at night you can expect to meet some right scum, loud, pissed up and sometimes up to fighting. Me and my partner used to walk round the place and would comment on the people there and say to each other: I bet they are 9.50. I've never taken part in the sun hols, we have always paid full price. Usually we meet nice people but when it's sun hols season forget it. Think of your local scum area or street and that's who you will be spending your precious time off work with

I really don't think they are that bad. We are looking at collecting the tokens this year even though we forgot the paper yesterday. It's nice to get away with the kids and if money is tight as it is with us this year you have to make do with what you can. It's all about the kids enjoyment at the end of the day. When they grow up they will be story's told. Good or bad I'm sure the kids will still enjoy as they are easily pleased if it means going on holiday or being stuck at home I know which my kids will choose

I (Steve) took my son on one of these when he was about 2, he's 19 now, and I was single and skint. He loved it, meeting all the other kids and I was a definite novelty in the clubhouse as a single father so I had a great time as well.

Would I do it again? Only if I was single and could borrow a toddler as bait for all the yummy (single) mummies

Calling people scum who go on this Sun offer is offensive.

People of all ages and status get d*unk on nights out on holiday. I have witnessed it in hotels in Britain, Europe and the States. Most certainly in all inclusive resorts. People let their hair down on holiday, some can take drink, others can't, it doesn't matter where you stay.

We'd be up for that kind of thing somewhere local to us (we have plenty of Haven/Park resorts etc down this way) We did actually have a couple of long weekends last year at these camps and had meets whilst there. x

At very least its a base to go places. I found caravans more consistent for quality although one at isle of wight gave us forest lodge upgrade even though we only expected caravans. Down side is can be cold at night /first thing in morning but maybe thats just me. Butlins is great for kids although they go very quickly.

Do they still do online searching and booking?

We've been on a few of these. The park resorts ones were good. We used them as a base and had great holidays at very good prices... We also went to Havens at Camber Sands... Even at 9.50 for all of us it would have been a rip off. I would have happily turned round and gone home...

The place was a dump and no matter what they had paid, most of the people there were scum. D*unk abusive children... Yes children not teens... Parents that left their children all day, broken bottles in the play area etc...

went on a couple a few years back now.

the one in Rhyl was great, not for the area, but the park and caravan itself were great.

big 6 berth van for just me and the ex, was like an old womans cottage. fantastic.

the second one wasnt as good, being honest, but again, it was the park and the area which let it down (illfracomb and everything was closed by teatime)

but, if you take it as it is, which is a holiday for £40 then you will never go far wrong.

we will be doing one this year, for sure

We booked for North Devon in July. Our first family holiday with our littlun who will be almost 3 months old.

2 hours up the road so if it all goes badly wrong we can go home. Plus family in the area who we've not seen for close to 5 years.

4 nights, 5 days for the 3 of us for just over £100. Can't be bad!

I'll happily be called scum for that price and an opportunity to have our first family holiday.
