Dreading the gym tomorrow. It's going to be packed!!

..i'm back on training again. Low carb diet. Bring on the protein!! Time to grow again.

Apologies in advance for all the moody behaviour that may occur.

Anyone else got any fitness aims for this year?

I'm no expert. But, if your looking to tone up. From what I know..best is to reduce the amount of carbs your eating, and go for more lean meat.

Oats in the morning to fuel your day. Plenty of water, _ruit and vegetables.

..there's only so much you can do at home I believe.

Both back to the gym on Monday morning after a Christmas break.... Looking forward to it. Fitness aims for this year.

T wants to do a full marathon after doing a half marathon for charity in September and I'd like to maintain my current general fitness levels and maybe hit a few personal bests.

Actually lost weight this festive period!

Finally back on my gym game after a couple of weeks off, and I'm sorer than sore.

Set the goal to pack on at least a stone of muscle in 2014. Can't wait!

I have no idea how it happened. I regularly ate myself into a coma during Christmas, yet each time woke up with less weight

I've been mentally off my training for months now, my previous best was a 75kg (bodyweight) press for 3 reps, now I struggle with 70kg for a single. I may return to sandbag lifting instead, it's a lot more cumbersome than a bar, but builds far more real world strength.

Depends how big the cases of beans are, heavy crates would be a perfectly good exercise implement also.

I guess you don't really talk to the trainers at the gym they will give you some proper advice with what to life what weights that won't develop you in the wrong way. I don't know how often you go but if you want to build up some real definition and make a change that is noticeable you want to talk to Archangel he seems to have it all sorted and gives good reason for using the correct apparatus and weights.

I don't talk to trainers at the gym probably as I don't train at a gym, and used to be a instructor myself. Muscle definition mostly comes down to bodyfat levels rather than training, and my focus is mainly on strength.

That's strange as you have commented multiple times on women seen at the gym in the past your not still hung over from new years are you? Muscle definition well you have to have it to define it and without going to exceptional low body fat levels its not going to happen unless you have real mass. As for strength lol well you don't go for definition if you want strength and power! I think lifting them teabags is confusing you, I wold contact Archangel he will put you right and on the right path although you will have a long way to go to get to his level.

The fact I used to be a fitness instructor should be a dead giveaway as to why I'd often see women at the gym

"Muscle definition well you have to have it to define it and without going to exceptional low body fat levels its not going to happen unless you have real mass."

And most people don't have have the potential to have both size and definition simultaneously.

"I wold contact Archangel he will put you right and on the right path although you will have a long way to go to get to his level. "

Of definition you mean? He has a good physique but that's not my main focus, I'll carrying on chasing strength thanks.

"Who is this Archangel?

He is a guy in Rotherham the one that won sexiest male in the forum awards. He knows his stuff and pushes a lot of aerobic exercise as well as weights and was the one who got me to chat with the instructors at the gym and got me doing exercises that I hadn't though about after watching me. If you get fit then toy can exercise more and build up more if that's your goal.

I would say its not just definition with him from what you are saying he lifts far more weight than you seem to maybe when you do get there you will be able to put up the results pictorially wise. Keep heart and conviction and you will eventually get there or at least someway towards your goal in time.

Bit of a non starter really given I have no idea what kind of poundages the guy actually lifts, as for my goals, well I reached a level of strength I was happy with a long time ago, but will always be looking to improve - the ladies certainly don't complain

Well considerably more than your 75kg press for 3 reps and he manages good definition too but I guess its not possible for everyone like you say. As for the ladies well they are not really looking for a guy who can carry a 70kg freezer up the stairs you may be going the wrong way about it if you need pointers i can help you improve.

Any advice would be appreciated - I'm currently trying to stick to Shaun T's T25 program as well as playing 5 aside twice a week. My diet isn't amazing though, I've removed all cakes/desserts/cookies et al...any sugars will come from _ruits.

I've lost almost a stone in about 7 months just by taking the sugars out. A couple of kilos still need shifting but I'm happily back in 32 inch trousers again

However, I'm not massively worried about sculpting my body, what I'd like is to become stronger, faster, and better coordinated ... C'est possible?

To answer the question, yes, I have several fitness goals this year as well as some general health goals.

I'm lucky that I am far healthier than I deserve to be given how poorly I care for myself. I won't get away with it forever though, I know.

This year I am putting in place some routines and will develop some habits for better physical and mental health.

I'm going to take time to relax properly, get into the habit of cooking rather than eating convenience food and junk, eat regularly and more healthily, exercise regularly, get out in the light and air more often, and try to be a bit more sociable.

I'm not sure I have enough testosterone to post on here...

But I'm building up for my first crack at a marathon in April. Didn't run yesterday as was too wet but will be in the gym tonight doing some core work and on the treadmill. After a disastrous half marathon just before Christmas and having lost 2 weeks training with a cold I'm currently having a massive mental wobble so need to knuckle down.

I've signed up foe jantastic, 3 4-week challenges to keep you motivated at running. The first challenge starts on Monday and it's about setting targets fortune amount of runs you will do for the first 4 week's.

I've set myself a goal of 3 a week as I'm a newbie to this running lark!

"As for the ladies well they are not really looking for a guy who can carry a 70kg freezer up the stairs you may be going the wrong way about it "

Sports specicifity. Repetitive gym lifting through the same planes and axes of motion don't always build 'real world' strength. Lifting and moving real objects in real ways will. The recent worlds strongest man contest has them lifting stones around, walking while carrying weights etc. they don't stick them on a weights bench to decide the contest.

I have also met people with average muscle mass that are very internally strong, almost immovable. It's where bruce lee's one-inch punch comes from, effective use of muscle. they have learnt to fully use the muscle they have. Monkeys have little muscle mass compared to humans but are stronger as they don't have the brain-imposed limits that humans have. They can call upon it more easily. A bit like people being stronger when they are angry/raging.

My fitness goal is to generally improve my fitness; lose half a stone, tone up, better stamina and suppleness. Il be heading back to netball and doing a great circuits class at my local gym plus making time for yoga as well. Feeling like a blob after Xmas stuffing so can't wait to get back to it

I have no problem lifting my body weight and hit 10 reps so I guess my advice is more relevant than yours but I don't get intimidated by guys who push bigger weights Hey I was a super duper macho man trainer like yourself too lol.......naaa I'll not go down th3e b/s route I prefer to keep it real. But you keep going you will get a little closer with lots of time.

C'est possible?"

"

Definitely!

Try kettlebells and balance exercises like standing on one leg whilst doing a shoulder press, one leg squats with a kettlebell in the opposing hand. This will soon give you more focus, balance and control. The strength part will come naturally after.

Once you mix things up from the norm (plateau) your body will have no choice but to adapt/change/grow due to the extra demands you are putting on it.

"Dreading the gym tomorrow. It's going to be packed!!

..i'm back on training again. Low carb diet. Bring on the protein!! Time to grow again.

Apologies in advance for all the moody behaviour that may occur.

Anyone else got any fitness aims for this year?

"

The gym is always madness in Jan so many sign up at this time of year so good luck.

A word of advice though on the low carbs as if you don't balance it out you won't be able to work out properly as you will lack energy. I always have pasta and chicken before training its a good balance of both and helps push a 90 min session. Also lifting heavy weights for just a few reps is counter productive you need a weight you can hit 7-8 reps with and ate pushing to get to the last 2 and under no circumstances lift heavy weights on your own its idiotic as you need a spotter of you are pushing it past your limit. Set yourself achievable 3 month targets and make sure its fun as there is nothing worse than not enjoying working out.

I lost weight after being ill before Xmas but have made lifestyle changes that I hope will help to keep it off.

Also going to be returning to martial arts this year (and maybe a bit of cheeky CrossFit as I find I lack motivatin lifting in the gym alone)

2014 fitness regime.

Giving up the refined sugars i.e. chocolate. I'll miss Malteasers very much

Continue eating my greens (spinach, broccoli and Brussel Sprouts).

Eat my oats before work in the morning more often.

Early morning runs

Hit the gym at least three times a week.

Increase my HIIT stamina.

There's more but I'll save that for myself.

Definately. That's what i'm doing at the moment. It's not about the weight for me but he form and feeling it on my muscles - i love that!!

..see, i'm a bit stuck. Because i've kind of switched my goals. Was going for mass before but my abs aren't really developed as such (i've been introduced to food lol). So, now i'm trying to focus on core exercises but the protein shakes that i have are quite high in calories and carbs (i.e. ON Serious Mass and Reflex Instant Mass).

Help?
