Would you rather spend £5 on gold membership or £2 on water aid to help impoverished communities stop dying of water born viruses?

I'm quite happy paying silver & donating to certain charities.

Why does it has to be either? Can it not be both?

I don't give cash to any charity, that usually just helps pay wages, provide cars and expenses for the charity staff.

I give time, one day a week, and then I know my aid is being directly used to benefit the recipients of my chosen charity.

It is so easy to give money each month, giving time is a lot more valuble.

or freeing up those staff to take extra holidays and do less work

If you want to support charities with low overheads support small ones with no paid staff.

I agree with your sentiment though - contributing time is often more valuable than money, albeit both are necessary.

I don't support WaterAid. I prefer to support education projects.
