"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Think that about nails it.

Most homophobics are scared of their own sexuality so quite an apt phrase actually lol xx

We hate PC - it's just unnecessary, and once you start you tie yourself in knots trying not to offend any person or group.

The example we like best are the "native Americans". they always used to be known as red indians, but some PC while official decided this was too insulting and they should all be called native Americans from that moment on. But they didn't ask the people concerned, who are perfectly happy to be called "indian" and actually don't like their new PC name!

Tell the truth and shame the devil as G's old granny used to say!

Yeah and my kids now have to call a black board, a chalk board! WTF??? On the other hand (and I just love the hypocrisy), a white board is more logically called, yep ... you guessed it ...

a whiteboard!

Mad Pride...mental health lobbyists...all my gay mates call each other queens...queers or faggots, my lezza mates all call each other, dikes...big lessies ..etc...and I dare not comment on what iyke and his black mates call each other...

I can hazard a guess that it's "nigger" which is I've been informed the same/similar to saying "bro". My black mates call each other this all the time, they're obviously not offended. I don't think most people would intentionally aim to offend but sometimes it can be so difficult ensuring one doesn't. Native Americans, does that make Aborigines Native Australians, where do we stop ????

A Home Among The Woodland Creatures

I recall a talk I went to by Alan Pease where he talked about his book "rude and politically incorrect jokes"

He said he thought it was ok to publish this book because he took the piss out of absolutely everything and everyone without discrimination.

He claimed the only complaints he got were from a certain indiginous people - who claimed there werent enough jokes about them in the book - which he promised to put right for the second edition, and Volvo drivers, but, as Alan so eloquently stated "who gives a fuck about what volvo drivers think!"

to be fair though - for every screeching Daily Mail headline about PC gone mad (is it just me or does everyone imagine daily mail articles being read in the voice of a screamingly insane old bag lady? - they often look like they were written by one after all) - there's another 10 examples of some old fuddy duddy judge letting a rapist off because the victim was wearing high heels and a mini skirt or some ancient tory lord denoucning homosexuality as an abomination.

The statrtling thing is that people rail against being prevented from using insulting or defamitory language.

Call it PC or just politeness, i don't think that it's acceptable to gall people poofs, dykes coons etc.

People have to be forced by changes to the social convention because they won't change their behaviour through rational argument.

Always makes me smile when it's a 3rd party that's shocked or insulted on behalf of some other group.

Let their insult be tried in a proper context, maybe not a court but some arbitrary system. An example, some schools seem to have banned baa baa black sheep or the 3 pigs as it might/could insult black or muslim children...

It needs to be seen how are they potentially insulted and are they really insulted or 3rd party do gooders kicking off.

The problem with that argument is that those who are insulted are invariably people who don't know that they can sue or don't have the money too.

I apreciate the 'do gooders' argument i just don't agree with it. Having lived with raist parents I have seen the pain and horror that intolerance causes. A few people whinging about minor infringements to their liberties does not compare

I was raised in a house hold where both parents were...racist and homophobic...and very verbal about their views....(avid daily mail readers)..ooohhhh...the sweet delicious irony of it all...their raging bisexual daughter with a blackman...ignorance and fear....they love my gay daughter and her camp mates...and adore my man...nothing to do with...P.C ideas being forced on them...just their ignorance and fear evaporated...

It was once feared that homosexuality was a disease and as such it could be contracted by contact with a woolly woofter. Hence the term homophobia - fear of homosexuals.

None of you have really touched on what PC is all about. You've all missed the point completely.

Firstly, it is NOT about someone caring enough about some little group somewhere getting offended by a phrase or saying that has been in use for centuries.

It is NOT about making sure that all the rthnic minotiries in Britain today feel that they are being treated equally.

It has got absolutely sod all to do with educating us and making us more respectful to everyone else.

Political Correctness exists purely because there are people in this country who get a real kick out of maing up rules. They love nothing more than sitting in an office and continually thinking up ways of expressing this power they've been given. It matters not on iota to them that a rule to protect lesbian turkish one-armed women who can't read will be detrimental to just about everybody else. They don't give a fuck - so long as they can continue to wield their big stick.

That's what PC is.

Havers!! I do believe it could have something to do with not wanting to use a stick of chalk to write on a blackboard when an Interactive Whiteboard is just that, interactive and white and is the modern replacement for blackboards!

The boards that are fixed to the wall alongside the interactive ones are whiteboards and yeah they use pens that dont make the same mess that chalk used to do and can easily be wiped clean without the dust.

The trouble is there are some horrendously over the top examples of where the principle has been taken way too far ..and those are the things which make the headlines and middle england gets up in arms. Hell they even piss the people off who are in favour of tolerance as they just provide ammunition for people looking to dismiss the whole principle.

personally Im glad to live in a society where for the most part it is no longer ok to use the terms like spaz and mong - it certainly makes it a nicer place for my son to live for the most part. I'm glad that he now has the opportunity to attend a mainstream school, rather than put away in some insitutional setting so that his behaviour wont upset the "normal" kids. I'm glad that people who educate him have to attend training to help them understand his needs and make them more able to support him to meet his potential , and that employers are prevented from excluding him from jobs in the future, and that they are actively supported to offer him opportunity by the provision under law of additional support etc when that time comes for him to take his place as an active citizen.

thats what political correctness has achieved for my son ...thats some of the reality of the day to day differences and cultural changes that have been happening steadily ( and still so much more that could happen! ) under the noses of people who prefer just to look for the extremes, the non sensical.

if i were to be deliberately provocative I'd maybe say the people who utilise the extreme examples are using them to dismiss the whole concept to defend theit own bigotry and ignornace of the real issues.

Nice to see some people on here do have common sense. I also agree some people ARE showing extremes to highlight their own bigotry and prejudice, and take EVERYTHING published in the Daily Mail as gospel.

Do you honestly believe, that say for example black people have so little to worry about that they take issue with such nonsense as whether children sing baa baa black sheep, or go into Starbucks and throw hissy fits if someone orders a black coffee to go?!!

I think you made some good points there; I would not like to live anywhere were it is considered acceptable behaviour to label and marginalise a minority on whatever grounds and physical or mental disability, their beliefs or ways of living, their looks etc.. the list is endless and defined by any marker that makes that minority different and distinct from the rest.

Nobody, but nobody has the right to bully anybody on the basis of their being different and I have found Britain overall a great place to be over the past 20 years or so, where political correctness is the very tool used to stop bullying. Now, if in an attempt to stop bullying and ill-treatment of minorities sometimes goes over the top, yes that is unfortunately a regrettable part of the process but for me not sufficient a reason to stop the attempt? I don't think we should loose sight of the overall purpose of making society (any society ) a better place.

Now in my native Germany, to give an example the version of the nursery rhyme "Ten little Indians" has also been changed into something more acceptable and most people can see the reasoning behind it. Then there are other examples of where pc has gone a bit too far.. just like overhere...and by the way, we still call our beefburgers "Hamburger", our doughnuts "Berliners" our sausages "Frankfurters" etc....
