Just finished wrapping presents at the hotel.

Popped down to the bar (admittedly it's Chav/squaddie central) for a drink.

Get to the bar and one of the many barmaids asks me what I want. I point to the Arab guy next to me and say he was first. She gives him 'a look' and takes his order.

He then tells me he's been there half an hour waiting to buy a drink, been ignored by staff, shoved sideways by groups of pissed up customers and insists on getting mine. I refuse . He insists. It's Xmas he says. I accept and tell him if I find myself next to him again it's my shout. Unlikely as there's several hundred people here.

Plymouth. I'm truly fucking shocked!

I'm not surprised but I am always shocked when it happens. I see it more often than I would like to and I experience it on occasion too. (Not just because I am short and they can't see me.)

To what does the grateful in the title refer?

Don't think it was about a free drink - its the fact that the guy was grateful to him for noticing him when no-one else did and he wanted to show his appreciation by getting him a drink

Funny thing is - he says he's gotten used to it.

The getting used to it becomes the norm because to do anything else, like challenge and make ANY fuss however polite turns things to make us the bad guys.

When people say racism doesn't exist any more they just need to open their eyes and see how people are treated.

And as the barmaid had stood in front of the guy pouring pints and then ignored him and came to me - no. I'm not tarnishing a city - possibly a bad choice of words - but certainly the busiest bar in said city.

But as he told me - he's used to it.

ok then of course its not right. i wasnt sure (as i obviously wasnt there) if he was mearly standing there or putting an effort in. i know when it comes to busy bars im just not good with packs of people and am not forward in making my requests known.

Evie (or Letsbe!) - not a manager in sight. And I suspect a whinge on behalf of another customer would've gone over their heads.

And having run bars in London myself I'd have hoped a sense of equality would be nationwide!

Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean you can't complain about it. It's obviously had an impact on you and if the chain aren't aware of what their staff are up to they can't rectify any issues.

I would maybe say something when I checked out.

I remember standing in the bar of a London pub, in the 70s, trying in vain to get my order in. As a foreigner, I was unaware that females were not supposed to be in that part of the pub.

Finally someone pointed out that there was a separate section for the wimmen.

In London it's not too bad, I travel a lot for business and notice the difference. I'm 53 years old, London born, you learn to ignore it as you'll ALWAYS be seen as the bad guy.

I think its disgusting too and I work shifts in a pub, none of us would ever dream of not serving someone because of the colour of their skin, disability etc. We are taught to concentrate on who is next in the queue and to serve people that way

This country is much better than many parts of Europe , London being the most cosmopolitan city in the world. You don't have to travel far from the centre to see ignorance and bigoted attitudes. As good as this country is, there is plenty of room for improvement.

You say you're shocked but in all honesty i think Lickety hit the nail on the head with her post.

Personally i never go to the bar unless i have a white friend with me. That sounds wrong & daft but without a 'wing man' i find myself in the same position as the random arab guy you refer to. I went to a friends a b'day social in Cannock a while ago and it took so long to get noticed & even then they wouldn't serve me cause they thought i was trying to get the women d*unk on purpose

Eventually the b'day girl and her hubby came over and ordered the drinks which i paid for. She was not happy and had a kind word with the bar staff for me

I do understand what you're trying to say bud & in an ideal world such behaviour wouldn't happen but it's not an ideal world & as much as we'd like think such behaviours are of the past they still do occur on a regular basis. People such as myself are just immune to it now
