"Haha - d*unk texts about wanting to be iron man and taking on squaddies has made my night D*unk - but seriously pissed off! " Aww, Just think "what would Tony Stark say?" . . . 'They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once. That's how Dad did it, that's how America does it, and it's worked out pretty well so far'

"What's the grateful part? The free drink? " Don't think it was about a free drink - its the fact that the guy was grateful to him for noticing him when no-one else did and he wanted to show his appreciation by getting him a drink

"What's the grateful part? The free drink? " Yep. But just been back to the bar and bought him and his wife one. Funny thing is - he says he's gotten used to it. Especially as he outranks most of them!

" The getting used to it becomes the norm because to do anything else, like challenge and make ANY fuss however polite turns things to make us the bad guys. When people say racism doesn't exist any more they just need to open their eyes and see how people are treated.

"so you tarnish a whole city based on the words of one man in a busy bar? ok so i agree its not right that he had to wait, but if he never stood up and made it obvious he was waiting in a busy bar could he just have been mistaken for a guy proping up the bar?" Stood up? The guy was wafting a fifty!! And as the barmaid had stood in front of the guy pouring pints and then ignored him and came to me - no. I'm not tarnishing a city - possibly a bad choice of words - but certainly the busiest bar in said city. But as he told me - he's used to it. Doesn't make it right though .

" He shouldn't have to 'make an effort' though, the staff should have done what they're paid to do - serve ALL customers!

"I hope you also made a complaint to the management regarding the attitude of the staff. " Evie (or Letsbe!) - not a manager in sight. And I suspect a whinge on behalf of another customer would've gone over their heads. And having run bars in London myself I'd have hoped a sense of equality would be nationwide!

" Evie Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean you can't complain about it. It's obviously had an impact on you and if the chain aren't aware of what their staff are up to they can't rectify any issues. I would maybe say something when I checked out.

Several hundred customers. Several bar staff. Most of which (staff & customers were trashed) Would've been pointless. Think i'll simply drink elsewhere from now on!

"I'm married to a soldier, a tea-total, non alcohol drinking soldier. Rare I know lol x Admittedly never been to Plymouth so can't comment on the area but not every soldier is the same as the soldier stood next to them x I'm proud to say my man is respectful of a person regardless of who they are, if they were there first then they get served first xx Katie xx" In Plymouth its more likely to be sailors than soldiers.

"Just finished wrapping presents at the hotel. Popped down to the bar (admittedly it's Chav/squaddie central) for a drink. Get to the bar and one of the many barmaids asks me what I want. I point to the Arab guy next to me and say he was first. She gives him 'a look' and takes his order. He then tells me he's been there half an hour waiting to buy a drink, been ignored by staff, shoved sideways by groups of pissed up customers and insists on getting mine. I refuse . He insists. It's Xmas he says. I accept and tell him if I find myself next to him again it's my shout. Unlikely as there's several hundred people here. Plymouth. I'm truly fucking shocked! " Thank you for this. If I, as a person of colour had posted this I'd have been accused of having chips on my shoulders. You're shocked: doesn't shock me at all!

In London it's not too bad, I travel a lot for business and notice the difference. I'm 53 years old, London born, you learn to ignore it as you'll ALWAYS be seen as the bad guy.
