...that petrol stations raise the price of fuel every budget day, BEFORE the budget has been announced, only to lower it a couple of days later. Is that to make themselves look better - like they're giving us a price cut. £117.9 a ltr now grrrrrr!

It's was only a couple of years ago we were protesting about it heading to a £1 a ltr.

I couldn't agree more. Perhaps ministers don't mind, because until recently they could vote themselves above inflation pay rises and can always still get their petrol on expenses.

ok, mp's rarely vote themselves pay rises (they haven't for about 5 years, cos they have had expenses to expand their incomes) and petrol stations do it because they are businesses. It's not like they trade to do us any favours, only the shareholders.

O o O oo

What I can't understand is when it got to about 80p a litre there were blockades everywhere prtesting.

Why isn't there any now? It is supposedly going to be about £1.25 a litre by the end of the month

Petrol prices are in the hands of the speculators in the Stock Exchanges around the world, if I look out across Lyme Bay when I drive into work every morning I can see well over a dozen oil tankers sitting there waiting for prices to rise before they dock their loads.

I've noticed that EVERY budget day, the petrol station round here put the prices up BEFORE any announcement has been made, only to put it down a couple of days later - bit of coincidence. Surely you don't think that they are not trying to use the budget to make additional profit??? And they won't get blamed for it, the Chancellor does, it's a win win for them. Pardon me if I don't weep for them or the shareholders.

no seen much of the budget yet but usual suspects fuel cigarettes and alcohol!!

we were talkin about that today when the blockades were happenin because of price and now its slowly creeping up every day then add to that road tax etc cars are becomin more a luxury than an essential!

round here public transport is diabolical and for me to use it to get to uni everyday would cost more than usin the car and also need to leave at 7am! xx

Must be very expensive public transport round your way, because you pay the earth to run a car before even putting any petrol in it

we all know the government fuel duty is the real reason fuel prices are so dear but there is a petrol staiton just down the road from us that cuts its price by 5 pence a litre every saturday and if they can do that every saturday why cant they do it every day of the week but we know why dont we its called profiteering.the british public have been treated like mugs for years and thats not going to change any time soon.changing government in may will not make any difference as the conservative party love the fuel tax just as much as this lot of crooks.i'm sure the older ppl amongst us will remember the hated fuel escalater.

nah my car only a tiny wee 05 plate wasnt that expensive and still works out cheaper than using bus!!

because of where i live i need to do 100 mile round trip every day and to do it on public transport would cost over £100 a wk because of where i live and amount i would need to use and thats not including for leisure purposes! xx

What gets me is all the fuss that was made when it was reaching £1.25 about 2 years ago - shot up from under a pound, people were panic buying and i couldnt get fecking half a tank to get to where i was going cos everyone else had filled up.

then they dropped the price down to £1.08/£1.11 and everyone was happy that the price was dropped.

It was still 10p more than before they hiked em up in the first place.

Since then they have been slowly creeping up - shoot up 5p drop down 2p, a kind of yoyo game that they think we dont fecking notice that we are paying more???

When i got my car 4 years ago it used to cost me £38 to fill up from empty.

Now i am lucky to get it full for £50!!!

Now THATS inflation!!

does that tell you something?"

In % terms it breaks down as follows:

UK: .......65% (govt duty)

Italy: ....53%

Germany: ..58%

Ireland: ..59%

Holland: ..56%

France: ...55%

Belgium: ..56%

Spain: ....48%

Sweden: ...51%

Cyprus: ...43%

So we're clearly miles ahead of anyone else with the exception of Ireland.

But here's what really bugs me about fuel:

We're told that the price has to rise as the cost of a barrel of oil rises, yet a year ago a barrel cost $160 to get it from the oil well to the forecourt and fuel was 125p/litre. yet the price has dropped to over half of that ($70) yet petrol prices remain the same or are heading back to 125p/litre.

Here's the real kicker.. there are 160 litres of oil in a barrel, so that's a whopping £16,660 profit on each and every barrel!

Some more food for thought is this:

BP & Shell have their own oil fields, so unless they are selling what they produce and buying in what they sell at the forecourts, how does the price of a barrel of oil affect them? How can thay blame fluctuations in the price of oil as a reason for these huge price increases when they're selling their own oil? There is no transaction cost to factor in, only production & traonsportation costs.

The bottom line is that we're being screwed on two fronts. The govt are using the 'green' policy to rip us off mercilessly and the oil companies are using oil price barometers to do the same thing themselves. And both of them seem to be wholly supportive of the other.

Anyone know the price of a bale of hay at the moment? I'm thinking of selling the car and getting a horse lol

Don't buy a horse, spend the money on a gun and vote with a bullet, it's the only kind of protest that the scum in charge understand, and the only one that works.

Or, spend it on some Astroglide so that when you continue to get fucked, it doesn't hurt so much.

(Or be British, grumble, but do nothing)

Its all those dam guys at the refinery who want wage rises! And have you seen down much diesel you need to fill up an oil tanker! Transportation costs are to blame
