Have you ever Sat and thought who would carry on your family's name ?

My brother has all girls ,I'm the only one left with a son that can carry on our name.

To think there won't be anyone else is quite sad. Does it concern you in any way ?

I legally changed my name to keep my mothers family name going. My problem now is I'm not getting married or having kids so I guess it dies with me

Yes. I've found myself wondering that a few times. I have some male cousins with children so it's carrying on at least one more generation. Guess it's more if a male thing to think about though,- those ancient dynastical traits!

My family name will Cary on through my son even though its not biologically mine, but the name of the man I call dad, but I'm proud to bear the name he is a great man.

A woman can keep her family name throughout her life and pass it on to her children in the form of a double barreled surname with her partners. That would get out of hand eventually though .

I prefer the system where girls take their mothers and boys their fathers name, no problem then as no one name belongs to a family. Although a make or female name could die out

it would be incredibly confusing in my case, my birth surname will die out. I took my stepdads name which has lots of males to carry on the line, or I can stick to my married name which doesn't actually go back anywhere! I have boys so I guess start of a new dynasty??

No it doesn't. I have 2 brothers who will carry on my maiden name.

I worry my ex husbands name will stop with our son as he and son are the only men to have the surname now

Mine will die with me too. No children here and my sister`s only child died when she was eight.

im not quite sure 'who i am'

i have my step fathers surname, our relationship ended 8yr ago. when i had my daughter she took my surname having never met him so feel a little bit odd even now about it all

my real dad has had zero input into mine or my daughters life and also my grandad is also technically no blood relation either.

meh.. i feel anonymous

My family has a long history, but mine is the last generation that will carry on the name in this little branch of the tree. Neither I or my sister have ever wanted children, my brother has a daughter, so that is that.

However, the name will continue on through the ages as there are several branches to our tree, so am not at all bothered

My son is the last male relative to carry on the family name, we are related to a very famous german double agency from world war 2

I have one male cousin who will carry on my family name.

I don't have children or neices and nephews, so this line ends with me.

I've never wanted children but I question that decision sometimes. I feel sad for my parents not having grandchildren. That's not the right reason to have children though.

At 40 I now consider it too late to have children, so if I change my mind now, it's tough.

No, although we're having a girl, the rest of the family have boys so the Paternal name will carry on.

My grandparents name will die with the last grandchild unfortunately and I think that's really sad. Not a lot you can do though is there?

I'm sure alot of the guys on here who go bareback don't have that worry if they are (in your area fancy a meet) and find out 20 years later they have a son whos mother was a layabout and they decided to look up dad and change their name

Even if my daughters dad was in her life i think id have still given her my surname over his as we arent married

Not really thought about it but just realised my brother who has no children is the last male with my father's surname so unless he starts a family it will die with him. My mum has nephews via her brother so her name will continue. As I'm divorced I could revert to my maiden name but my son's have my exs name and so my father's name still won't continue. Ironically I hated my name growing up but will sad to see it disappear
