notts

so our government reckon they are going to start switching FM off starting in about 3 years and going onto digital radio.

So, whats going to happen with the millions of cars on the roads with FM radios?? Yes i know you can still drive them before anyone says "they will still be drivable", what i mean is, will we all be stuck with listening to cd's with no radio or traffic news etc??

Well you know its coming so you have 3 years to buy a new radio for the car/van.

No different than the TV change over really.

Only your old stuff will no longer work.

Wonder how many MPs have shares in radio manufacturing companies ????

That's what they said on Radio 4 this morning which I heard with perfect clarity on FM. They said DAB goes all fuzzy somehow and reception isn't very good in some areas.

I'm not looking forward to or happy about this, DAB is an old and outdated technology (it will be 30 in 2015!).

FM works well, I don't see why it needs to be replaced.

Fuzzy would be an improvement.

It's funny! They always ask politicians questions they won't answer properly!

but most cars nowadays have built in designed for the car units, not like a few years back when virtually any unit fitted the hole in the dashboard.

so dont think changing the radio will be an option, if it is, it will be a very expensive option

Need? Ha! It'll be because some rich, influential people will make a lot of money out of it somehow.

That it works, is used widely and people are happy with it is entirely irrelevant.

It has good and bad points. As the digital signal takes up less bandwidth than FM, for more stations. So it free's up a bit of the spectrum. The trouble with Digital seems to be in its reception. Theres no middle ground with reception, you either hear it or you don't. You know how you can have good FM reception, then it gets a bit fuzzy, then fuzzier.....until it's gone. Well digital doesn't have that. Which doesn't work well when you're driving through limited signal areas.

Also, and from a nerdy point of view, you used to be able to get kits that taught anyone how to make AM or FM receivers, they were basic but inexpensive and gave me my first taste of putting stuff together. Basic training for geeks. You can't do any of that with DAB.

I do like DAB, the choice of music you have is excellent. But I think getting rid of FM totally is a bad idea.

Dont panic everyone the change over wont stop you using your car radio home hi fi's and alarm clocks yes they are going dab but your local radio stations will still transmit on f.m in favour of the didital platform but alot of your larger stations will aim more to dab as alot do now but they will still run on f.m for many years to come as they earn alot of cash with adds they run and not everyone will be set up for dab
