Because the banks make it too easy for the scammers

If you knew how easy it was you'd be shocked

We had our business scammed through HSBC and found that loads of businesses had the same problem and had lost fortunes (because the liability falls on the business not the bank)

I wrote a fix for their software, to plug a big security hole in their online banking and offered it for free, they didn't want it as it meant them accepting they had a problem

Despite their best efforts, card readers are not secure, chip and pin is a joke, the banking halfwits are no match for a clever scammer.

It would cost them more to fix the problem than they actually lose, so why bother?

I feel for you, it's like getting burgled, but it's the bank's fault for leaving the doors wide open to the vault, with no retribution even if the scammers are caught.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I never do online banking as I feel it is so unsecure.

I had my card cloned some years ago - before chip and pin - and the bank (HSBC) picked up on it straight away and I lost nothing. Apparently, I was spending money in Guildford when, in actual fact, I was in Dresden, Germany on holiday with my hubby (at the time).

They have been great ever since, I have to say.

Every time I go away on hols I let them know when and where. I did a driving tour of southern Spain a couple of years ago and went to Gibraltar. I wanted a bit of cash out to get a drink and a bite to eat and, naturally, it came out in British pounds, not Euros. Almost 5 minutes later the bank phoned and asked me about the transaction as it showed me taking money from a British bank not a Spanish one as I had told them. That is what I call good service.

I went to Cardiff for a few days in April this year while I was there I used my credit card for what I thought was safety. Only used it in bloody next and holister when I got home I had a call from the fraud team some tool had cloned it and spent £3500 on a holiday website. Cheeky buggers could have took me too haha thankfully. If I'm out etc I only ever use a credit card and pay it off in full every month the card company obviously picked up on my spending history etc. They then blocked everything as they could see the person still spending on it and linked it to someone in Manchester.

I think you mean Midland Bank - I was with them from 1984 - so nearly 30 years with the same bank.

Sunderland

I too have been with HSBC since 1991. I had my credit card skimmed when I was on holiday in New York. Only used it in one restaurant. It was a gambling website that phoned me when we had returned home. I phoned them up they were fab cancelled my card and later told me the New York division would sort there side out. Always tell them when I'm away.
