"We've just found one of our pics being used by a French dating website. We've contacted them and told them to remove it, but what can we do if they don't? I'd arrange a date with the person whose using it.... " What a good idea

"All the people who use google search will report you now as fake " That's what we did. We'd never heard of this google reverse search thingy until it was mentioned in another thread (now closed) So we searched some of our pics and while most were OK one came up as being used somewhere else. Should anyone be in doubt we not only have the original (un-cropped) version, but also all the others taken on the same day. Over the next few days we will remove and re-post our pics but only after adding a watermark.

"The dating site may not be aware that your image has been copied, it's possibly been stolen by a scammer, so contact the website first. On the other hand, a lot of dating websites build fake profiles so they look like a popular site. If they don't take down the pic (and they should really kill the entire fake profile), then find the ISP of the dating site, for example, by using whois. Then file a takedown notice for copyright infringement with the ISP. " That seems like good advice. Thank you.

" It shows though that people place too much inportance on google search, as yours are genuine on here and nicked to put on another site. Sometimes it isn't as black and white as people think. Hopefully once you had reported it and provided proof the pics are yours the site will remove them for you.

"actually, you don't need to provide proof. You just need to file the notice and assert the copyright violation - there's a standard wording for doing it. You may have to provide a URL pointing to the original image. The ISP should take down the infringing copy automatically." Isn't providing the url to the original pic providing proof? Otherwise anyone could file a "copyright violation"

Watermarking your pics so they can't be nicked is a great idea. It would be better if the fab watermark ran across the middle of the pic rather than along the bottom where it can be easily cropped out.

"All sounds too contradictory to me but I am sure you know best. " er, actually, ahem, I do know best but that's only because I am always issuing takedown notices against people who violate my company's copyright. My advice however is to approach the website itself first - dating websites can be victims too, and a reputable one puts a lot of effort into getting rid of fake profiles. The other reason the website should be approached first, and not the ISP, is because, as part of the takedown process, you have to supply your name, address, etc, and the ISP may supply this info to the Chilling Effects database, so the whole world can see what image was being complained about and by whom. The OP may not want this to happen.

"All sounds too contradictory to me but I am sure you know best. er, actually, ahem, I do know best ." I think thats what I said ..... Although some of it did sound contradictory but as I know bugger all on copyright laws I am taking your word for it.

As some will have already noticed we have started to change or pics to new watermarked ones. We've reached our quota for today so will finish the job tomorrow. The sharp eyed ones among you will notice that what was our old profile pic has been replaced by a slightly different one taken the same day. We would advise everyone to do the same.
