work uniforms

does anyone on here have to wear a uniform for work? don't worry, this is not a fetish nor am i researching anything.

i have to wear a uniform and its gross!!!

i wouldn't mind, i do not have a 'front of house' job where the first impression matters.

this is the first time i've ever had to wear a uniform since i left school at 16! i hate it. its nylon and crackles all the time! i wouldn't mind if we had a set colour to wear, black pants, white blouse etc, but no.

i understand that nurses and other allied professionals have to wear uniform, and if i had a job in one of those fields, fine I would respect that.

does anyone on here agree with me that at the age of 41, i would know what is appropriate for work or not? i feel that as long as you are clean, presentable and project a professional image, you should be able to inject your personality. my colleagues disagree with me and they even wear theirs if they come into work on a weekend!

it also means that if I'm out after work, i have to transport a change of clothes with me.

When I did have a uniform (and we could mix and match) it was brill, I didn't have to think about what shall I wear today to work, it was decided for me!

Also I could spend money on "non work" clothes - brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have to say we didn't have shirts that crackled though, it was ok.........

know what you mean about getting up and not having to decide what to wear.

however, i like that part of deciding what to wear - a dress, pants, skirt and top, all depending on my mood. i think it makes you take more pride in yourself.

i just wish they would say that we could have a variant - so long as you are wearing 'the colours' and your ID badge, then that's acceptable.

what annoys me that is that the management don't have to wear uniforms, nor do other departments, but for us its a discplinary matter if we dont!!!

uniform for me every day of the week

a nice pair of trousers that smell of damp dog when they get wet, a shirt with collar that chokes you, and a nice wooly jumper that makes you itch like there is no tomorrow

oh, and a rather sexy hat as well

The company I work for supplies a uniform that I am 'obliged' to wear and even deducts the cost of it from my wages. But at least my own clothes don't get wrecked in what can be a particularly messy job if the weather has been bad.

I believe my next job allows their employees the option to wear a polo shirt with the company logo on it as uniform.

Personally, I hate polo shirts as I find the collars do not sit right on me, and they can look scruffy.

I work in an industry where cleanliness and personal hygiene are of paramount importance. Hence I am all in favour of an employer issued uniform that everyone needs to change into the moment he/she walks through the door, so that he/she leaves his/her own clothes in the locker etc...

I am also in favour of everyone wearing the same outfit and uses the same staff facilities.

I can appreciate the need of corporate identities, hence the need for a uniform. I just wish they are made of better materials than horrid nylons and polyesters!

In my day job we can wear what we like as long as its fairly smart but in the second job, i have to wear a branded shirt, so not as bad as crackling, though its very nice when you dip it in gravy

Most of my jobs have been menial jobs like cleaner or shop assistant.

As a cleaner I was allowed to wear what I wanted usually jeans and vest top or t-shirt, which is fine for travelling in but the second bleach gets on the tops thats it they are ruined and I got to the stage I no longer cared what I looked like for work.

When I worked as a shop assistant I had a uniform, which wasnt so bad cos it was just a t-shirt with the company logo on, and trousers of my choice, so I could dress it up a bit

The last job I did was in a call centre and just before I was hired the new managment brought in a rule that you had to look professional, I loved that and made an effort each day to look like I belonged. Smart shirt, smart trousers or skirt, and heels, hair done and make up on.

It was noted a few times during one to one meetings that I always turned up looking like I was ready to work and worked accordingly, so maybe wearing some sort of uniform and how you react to it depends on what you are doing and how you see yourself in that job?

I tend to wear long and mainly black.

The three girls that work for me have to wear aprons at all times, you would not believe the fuss they give me about this.

One hates the apron full stop, the other two moan about the logo's and text I have printed on them.

They are going to get the real hump when they get the baseball caps I have just ordered for them....

thanks for everyone's feedback on this.

i have no objection in portraying a professional image, in fact i'm all for it, but the fact is i'm not on the front line dealing with people on a face to face basis. my work is done mostly on the phone, and behind the scenes.

i work in the public sector and obviously due to security, we are all issued with ID badges. so if management were to say to all the admin staff you can wear black pants/skirt with a white shirt/blouse then that would be cool with me. it would still look like a uniform but with my own personality added in.

there had been talk of abandoning the current uniform with the black and white as an option but it was poo-pooed sadly.so for now, until i find a new job (and not just because of the uniform), ill just to put up with it.
