Are you honest if given too much change?

I was in a supermarket today, and the young guy on the checkout gave me £5 more change than i should have got. I told the guy that he given me to much change. I felt sorry for him because he looked like he had only just started the job and was lacking a bit of confidence, so didn't want to add to his worries by taking it and making his till not add up when he finishes his shift.

Well if the lad cant count to ten,then why is he in a position like that ????

If the shop wants cheap labour then it has to pay the price.

If I notice then yes I'll tell them. Was in a shop recently and the ticket said and item was £9 but came up on the til as £3, did question it but the manager let me have it and said he would investigate for future.

Only if i hated the firm/person serving me, lol.

Corner shops can't afford to lose the money and probably take serious action if money is missing from the till.

Supermarkets there is no proof on where it was stolen, mis counted and by who, etc. So they would just sack the most inexperienced colleague,

No I wouldn't say anything to be honest. The amount of times I've been over charged and didn't realise till later makes up for it. The other week I asked for £50 cash back at the supermarket and got gave £70 but didn't realise till later on when I went in my wallet

Half the time i wouldnt realise if i had been given the right change.....i chuck it in me purse and thats it,. Wrong i know....

Recently handed back £1000 given to me in error. Got cash from the bank for some decorating work to be done whilst on hols, asked them to put it in an envelope. Left the envelope for the decorator who called whilst I was away to say there was too much cash which was really honest. I called the bank and they sent me 2 bottles of wine which was a nice touch.

Maybe it was just a mistake, no one is perfect

To the OP, yes I have done, not just because the person on the till may get into bother over it but because I am honest and would feel guilty spending any money that wasn't really mine.

I think he made the mistake because the loyalty card of the customer in front wouldn't scan for him no matter how he scanned it, and i think it was on his mind when he made the mistake as he a long line of people waiting.

I pointed out a massive mistake made while I was buying something once,the person on the till assured me it was all correct,I thought ok ive mentioned it so can't do anymore than that,then run out the shop real quick

That's what i was thinking. Im guessing the supermarkets can work out how much money that person has taken in their shift, and they can pinpoint if money is missing.

They can, but sometimes 3 people use a til during a day. Sometimes more, which is why if they suspect a colleague. They do register checks on their till and they will check it when they has been sharing a till and when they are the only ones to use it.

Yes, I am honest.

I withdrew some money from a savings account once and was given £100 too much. I checked it before I left and took it back to the counter when I realised. You've never seen a member of a bank's counter staff look so relieved. She must have thanked me twenty times.

It pisses me off when the bank use the excuse of going less than a pound overdrawn for a day as a reason to charge me £12+ (although I always call and argue with them and haven't failed to have a charge refunded yet). However, I knew having her drawer come up short could have serious implications for the staff member; a real person, just trying to get by like most of the rest of us.

Maybe I could justify taking the money from the bank, (though probably not because the customer always pays in the end anyway), but I couldn't in good conscience let the staff member suffer for it.

Perhaps I'm an idiot though.

I've also told one of the benefit agencies in the past when they told me they would be paying me a bit over £2000 more than I was owed. And that was when they were paying me a back payment for benefit they had stopped wrongly, and which I'd had to survive without for 3 months.

Yeah, I'm definitely an idiot.

I just have to hope my honesty will bring me positive things in life and will be rewarded.

It would depend on the person on the till. If the cashier is rude i wouldn't but if the cashier is polite i would tell them.

I would tell if Subway only charged me for single cheese when it should double, a difference of 20p. Squeaky clean here when it comes to being undercharge anything.

I recently bought a new coat. it was reduced to ridiculously cheap cos the belt was missing. when I got to the till the assistant said "I've seen one of those belts in a drawer somewhere" it took her a couple of minutes but she found it and still gave me the reduction!

But after years spent in retail and evenings spent with a till roll trying to work out where a till imbalance has come from I make sure my change is correct even if an error is in my favour.

No because if they were concentrating on what they were doing then they wouldn't have made the mistake in the first place!

The ammount of times we've been in supermarkets and the check out staff are to busy talking to each other about where they were last night etc etc

I would as some places make their checkout operators pay for any shortfalls. So basically you would not be taking the shop's money but that of the poor sod who made the mistake.

I once got £10 too much change in boots, made four attempts to explain to the girl but each time i did she said i was wrong.

so i gave up and kept the £10

I had a Chinese tourist give me three £50 notes for a £13 fair. He thought they were fivers. Of course I gave it back. On numerous times notes stick together or someone gives me too much. I'll always give it back. It's not my money so I don't want it.

In my job I see hundreds of foreign tourists everyday and this kind of thing happens at least once a day. We also get them just opening their purses and asking us to take the right money out, its just as well we're all honest!

In the past season we also had one customer leave a purse with two passports and £600 in it on the counter. Another left a video camera and another a tablet computer. Its no wonder criminals target tourists!

Years ago we had a miserable old git who ran the post office. He once served me and I walked off then thought this change is wrong. I went back to him and said it was wrong , he was really rude and said I cant do anything about it now you should of checked before you left the counter. So I said fair enough thank you for the extra 32 quid you have given me. Lol
