I'm not going to say my opinion one way or another yet.. Ha!

What do you think about a 3 year old having a television in their room?

Too young?? Or ok to have it on for them to watch before bed and maybe fall asleep to?

Brighton - even Hove!

I wouldn't. Watching tv before bedtime is actually not calming. I was too lazy to read to my kids so used to put a cd of a story on and let Stephen Fry read them to sleep whilst I watched TV.

Mine never had televisions in their rooms at the that age, but they do now, gone are the days of a bedtime story I think, its a shame.

my view is it is too young, I think children that age should have a very limited amount of TV, far too many people use it as a babysitter.

It's too young and teaches bad sleep hygiene. There is a lot of research that shows blue light (televisions, computers, tablets etc.) are detrimental to good sleep.

No reason not to reintroduce them. Quality time together. There's plenty of time for kids to watch tv or computer screens at daytime.

Right here's my reason for asking...

My little lad is 3 in feb, he was occasionally playing on my phone or ipad puzzle games and stuff but was totally useless at actual puzzles. Anyway about a week ago he threw the mother of all tantrums coz I wouldn't let him play on the ipad so I took it away and now he's not allowed to play at all.

Since then (in about 5 days) he's been doing proper puzzles and has gone from doing crappy 2 piece ones where you match the cows head and arse lol to a big 30 piece floor puzzle that I got him yesterday which he mastered in the space of a couple of hours!

His dad picked him up today and said he was gonna get him a tablet for his birthday (even after I told him about the not allowing him on it) but he only has him one day a week so I let him get on with it.

Now he's just text me saying instead of the tablet should he get him a tv/DVD combi for his room.

I said no. Just get him toys to keep at his house for when he's there, if he wants to watch a film then we watch it together in the living room or have half hour watching in my room before we read a bedtime story.

I don't want him sat in his room for hours at a time zoned out in front of a tv! No doubt I'll get stick when he drops him off but I don't think I'm being unreasonable. (He told me the other day that his current gf daughter who is 3.5 goes to watch tv in her room at 4.30 and stays there till bedtime!!! )

This is another thing floro, I don't think he would be bothered. If he's watching cbeebies in my bed in a morning while we have a drink before we get up and I leave the room he follows me. Or if he wants to watch a film he wants me there. So it would be a waste of money anyway!

....melatonin is the hormone produced by the body which aids sleep. Its affected by daylight/dark so if your watching TV or pc screen they emit a similar light to daylight which lowers melatonin levels and affects sleep. Though thinking on to how many times my ex fell asleep in front on the telly who knows lolol

Can't see the problem myself - just get one without a remote and fix it to the wall quite high up. That way - by the time he grows up enough that you're happy he won't be watching inappropriate TV (Songs of Praise, Lorraine, anything with Graham Norton) he'll be tall enough to turn the fucker on himself without nagging you!

My son had 1 in his room from around aged 2 it had no arial so could only watch videos. He was never allowed to watch it at bedtimes unless a fri night and even then I would put him to bed an hour earlier.

That is so sad about his girlfriend's daughter.

Giving your son actual puzzles to do also builds his fine motor skills and left/right skills are really important for brain development.

I don't have kids but here's my 2p worth...I wouldn't allow a telly in the room til a bit older, maybe about 7 or so. I've never had a telly in the bedroom (apart from as a teen at home when my bedroom was a bit of a bedsit with a sofa, coffee table and furniture as well as a bed), half the fun of childhood for me was reading under the blankets with a torch (and as a teen, smuggling guys under the blanket and doing other things than reading - but that's another thread ). Good to hear your little un is developing his puzzling skills

I think it's too young. We still don't have a TV in our bedroom now.

My daughter has one and has had one since she was about twelve but even then I was reluctant to get one.

Everyone is different though and I'm not a telly person at all.

For me it's a no. If the child needs help getting to sleep read to them. Always did that for my daughter - it was her bedtime ritual. Never ever had bedtime issues. It was bath, milk and a biscuit and then story time. And reading with a child is so much better than simply sticking them in front of a telly.

Too young and they should not watch TV just before bed as the light will make it hard for them to get to sleep.
