Do you stand up...

The land of grey peas and bacon

And say something when you hear someone in a public surrounding say something offensive against another person whether it's to with religion,colour or physical appearance? I was watching a social experiment where they were having actors say racist remarks. The customers in the shop were not aware that they were actors and some of the responses were powerful...it made me think do we stand up and say something or do we choose to ignore?

I can't recall ever coming across as racist scene whilst out and about, but if I ever hear male raised voices, especially around women, then I will slow down and loiter around to get a better idea of what's going on, in case someone might need me to help them.

I do it all the time if I think people are being offensive to others , I particularly hate bullies and have ended up in some tricky situations standing up for poeple I don't know. My other bug bare is people who drop litter, I will gladly pick it up and shove it into their pocket if they refuse when I confront them,

I guess in any situation where one is being offensive to another person....I was badly bullied at school had my wrist broken and was pushed where I hit my head on a marble staircase it was those incidents in life that made be believe that I have to stand up and say something if I see the same happening to someone else...

once stopped a guy from glassing someone only to be hit from behind by his mate whom if he had also been holding a glass would have cost me the sight in one eye..

lesson learnt..

I have done but it depends on the context. I usually tell people off for swearing loudly in public around children, dropping litter or abusing women and children.

If the racist or sexist comments come from anyone I know they will get told. If it is someone picking on someone else or talking about about someone there in a derogatory manner then I will challenge but if it is 'conversation' not directed anywhere then I bite my tongue and move on.

And I do challenge on here. Strangely I get more backlash for challenging on here than I do out on the street. I get less support for challenges made here than out on the street too.

Not been in that situation before so unsure of what I would do, hopefully I'd speak up. I was bullied as a kid and far too often nobody would step in, even teachers, until I retaliated and punched my bully in the face

Overtly racist comments around me are extremely rare, maybe people are more careful what they say around a guy that they percieve may intervene.

When I witness offensive behavior based on ignorance, my stock response is to say 'you haven't really thought that through, have you' (wifhout shouting but loud enough for all in the vicinity to hear). It normally has the desired effect.

I believe people who behave in an offensive way should always be challenged publicly, it changes behaviors.

i have done but have read the situation wrong and looked like a twat lol

unless you hang around long enough to get a true feel for the situation its hard.

i did make a loud comment yesterday in a shop where a girl was trying to buy presents for her friends but everything she suggested was poo-pooed by her mother, i just said 'just let her buy what she wants for her friends ffs!!' but i dont think they heard me

I do that too. Probably not wise for me to do it though.

I've stuck up for people and been shouted down for interfering. I don't care I'll do it again if I think it's warranted.

If it was one person being racist/ abusive I'd keep an eye on it to see if I could help. I've stopped the car before to give someone a lift to get him away from kids abusing him.

Think there's an American show where I have seen this happen a few times.

I would hope that I would be the person who would stick up for the person in the right.

there have been a couple of cases in the news recently that show that in general people don't stick up for those being abused. A disabled man was murdered and he'd suffered abuse for years not even the police stood up for him. A woman killed herself and her disabled daughter for the same reason. I know of a case in an educational facility that caters for all abilities where two downs girls were verbally abused in a sexual way by "normal" young men in a crowded canteen....one person intervened.....the boys were spoken to later and it was explained to them exactly what those young women went through just to get the confidence to go into the canteen and to their credit they apologised face to face. My point I suppose is that the majority won't intervene but it does only take one person and I really hope I would do it.

Its nice to hear that there are those willing to stick up for others around them

I recall one time I saw a woman being harassed by a gang of lads, when who should come to her aid but an OLD LADY! I watched the scene unfold from afar as I passed by, there must have been some 6-7 of these lads but she strode right up to them, looked the 'leader' straight in the eye, thrust out her finger and growled 'shut your dirty mouth!' and they all backed off, sure they were chuckling to themselves but it didn't matter, that old lady broke the scene up admirably, it was amazing.

depends, if it was a private conversation I over heard I wouldn't say anything, if someone was shouting and making a fuss I would as them being loud and shouting to the point I have no choice but to listen makes it my business as fat as im concerned

sometimes its best to just walk away from abuse, not always possible I know but most people who are abusive to people in the street are looking for a fight and I find it best not to give it them, as the saying goes it takes a bigger person to walk away

Yes I have. As I work in public sector I have had cause to put a stop to offensive comments whilst working, but ive also told someone waiting on a train platform who was giving out a lot of racial abuse. I got a lot of abuse back but I couldn't stand to say nothing whilst they were spouting vulgar comments.

I have seen that and when I have intervened I have been attacked by a gang of young women. It was still the right thing to do and the shamefaced look they gave me when I held my ground and pointed out how awful their behaviour was made it worth doing.

Had to tell a thug at the recent England game to stop shouting "kill the f@+king Jews" which he didn't constantly for nearly 20 mins. It was intimidating and unpleasant but I'm glad I did it and he did stop once confronted.
