How do you deal with Cold Calls

They can be annoying at the best of times. Do you:

* Say a polite thanks but no thanks.

* Tell them to f**k off.

* Cut the call off without saying anything.

Would you have any sympathy with the caller as he/she is only doing a job to earn some money.

I don't answer the phone.

If I do answer I'm always polite. They are just doing their job.

I always try to cheer call centre people up. I feel bad that they probably got abuse all day. People can be really mean.

It depends on when they call, also if they come up with a local number or not.

Those that call during the day get no answer.

Those that call early evenings are likely to find themselves chatting with my 2 year old.

Those that call evenings will hear the thud as I drop the phone back onto the cradle, but as I'm tps registered they shouldn't ring here anyways, and I dont give the number out (I dont know it )

It depends on which company it is, the person making the call, what time it occurs, if I was doing anything at the time and my mood.

I am on the TPS so get few. Of those I do get I simply point out that I am on the TPS and should not be calling.

If it's a number I don't recognise I will answer the phone by saying Woodford police station. If it's a cold caller I will chastise them for tying up an emergency number.

Depends on who or why,

Those evil scum who claim to be from Microsoft and trick the vulnerable into giving them access to their computers so they can rob them, don't deserve nice, those flogging loans, windows etc. just doing a job deserve a polite version of f off and don't call back.

I love the Microsoft ones. I used to work in IT specialising amongst other things in server security.

I tie them up in knots. They usually hang up on me. I consider them sport.

I normally say I am dead and it was my funeral today, burst into tears, then ask them "why are the good ones taken from us" and follow that with me saying how much of a good man I was.

They really don't know what to say.

(ps, not as me obversely lol)

So do I, I consider it a public service to keep them on the line and away from robbing my or anyone's mother! it's also very amusing when in the right mood.

i have tried all sorts...police, trading standars, chip shop, plumbers merchants etc but they usually just plough on reading down there script. So now once i know what its about i say "i'll go and fecth him" and just leave them hanging on.

The ones that really get my goat are the "can i speak to the homeowner"...i usally start messing them about e.g.

i am sorry Homer isnt here, but hercules is would you like to speak to him. He's just got back from greece..... and then i just drone on and on.They usually give up lol.

Hi. I was once one of these callers. The best thing to do. Ask there name and what company they are calling from. Politely ask your number to be removed from their calling list. Then say you are not interested in anything. Then hang up. Simples.

Or you could just start talking shit to them. When they try and interrupt you. Ask them politely not to interrupt you while you are talking!!

Or just say,"will you fuck right off cunt face?"

I'll just ask where they are calling from and how they gt my TPS registered number, which they can never tell me or they'll insist I must have put it into something, but I never use my landline for anything so that can't be the case. Then I'll ask them to remove me from all their systems. I'm never rude, but am very firm...after all they are just doing their job and haven't personally selected my number to ring. If they try to tell me I am interested then things change and they'll usually go away with a telling off!

One of the reasons I rarely answer the house phone, I think they record when the phone is answered and keep calling back about that time then....

I used to get a lot of these calls I tried the usual:

Be polite to them.... Didn't work still got the calls

Told them to F*ck off ..... Didn't work still got the calls

Leave them hanging on the phone....Didn't work still got the calls

Eventually I just told to hang on a second while I start to record the call because the police have asked for evidence of the harassment...... I suddenly stopped getting the calls

My mam god rest her soul. Had a cold caller trying to get her to sign up for an evening news paper. She listened as he went into his pitch then asked nicely what he was trying to sell her. She politely said no thank you son and hung up. He called back minutes later and said he didn't like her attitude. I smiled at my mam and told him to f*ck off. First time I ever swore in front of my mother. He never called back.

You're best off just politely saying no thanks and hanging up. You can get angry/swear/talk about the TPS etc etc. The person you're talking to really won't care. Having done call centre work all they do is have a good laugh about you when you've gone. And leaving the phone on the side, putting it next to a radio...perfect from their point of view..they will sit back and put their feet up, and not have to call anyone else for quater of a hour. If you really want to wind them up actually take the time to try and talk to them!

That usually won't make a lot of difference as the numbers are passed/sold to many different companies. Even if one was to take the number off the list, others will still keep on calling.

But I am blaming a random member of this forum for putting me up to it, don't know who you are but it's your fault

Hmmm it's not bad but no not fool proof. I have a BT machine that's supposed to block some numbers - the jury's out on that one currently ! Or I have extensively used BTs change your number for free. I've found this a huge success and also deters annoying relatives

Essex.

Our home phone packed up about a year ago and we haven't bothered to replace it...

A story in the papers a few years back. A bloke got a second phone line installed that charged £5 a minute. When he got a cold caller he would ask "Do you mind if I transfer this call to my office phone so we can talk in peace? " He then sat and chatted for ages... After a few weeks he stopped getting cold calls and gave a few hundred pounds to charity...

Although I should add that we have in the past inherited some odd numbers - like the local vicarage. We used to get frequent enquires for christenings, the odd wedding but mostly funerals alas. The temptation at times was immense

To completely stop nuscience calls from annoying telesales and annoying relatives, I recommend using the BT not paying your bill service, combined with unplugging the phone to stop BT phoning to whine about the unpaid bill. soon stops them all

I did read a few week back of a similar topic but elsewhere and found the best reply. It involved answering the phone by whispering 'yes the job is done but I am covered in blood now. I will have a good clean up after disposing of the body'

Did make me chuckle
