Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I'm watching 28 Up: South Africa. What a country of contrasts. I'm fascinated that the country has so many languages spoken all at the same time.

It's a bit of a sad episode but I am intrigued to know more about the country and its people. If you have a South African tale please share it.

Thanks, I will have a look. I am particularly interested in first person accounts at the moment. So much has happened to South Africa in the last 28 years.

Its a beautiful country ruined by idiots. First it was Apartheid and white people treating non-white people badly. Now it's free it's black people treating non-black people badly

Personally i feel for 'coloured' people as they are get screwed by both sides. I only look at neighbouring Zimbabwe and wonder how long it'll be before SA transcends to that level of political inadequacy

I guessed that. It's just watching 28 Up and seeing the clips of these young people as they were at seven and as they are now I am in tears.

It is interesting that 'coloured' people are not in the programme at all. Yet they are as much a part of the South Africa story as any other racial group.

I was talking to a South African White woman not long ago, things are no better, blacks treat whites as shit now. She said if a policeman pulls your car over you only have to pay money and you are let off anything. Madness

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I know a few white South Africans who moved here because SA was just too dangerous, and they had family here.

Getting visas was a nightmare, even though they all had jobs and the support of their employer and wanted to work and make a life here.

I most vividly remember the most recently arrived, who has been here maybe 5 or 6 years now, describing her amazement on her trip from the airport at there not being high fences and security signs everywhere.

They have some great traditons such as barbecues. These can involve building a big fire pit to cook the meat in. Ridiculous amounts of preparation but the results are amazing.

When i went there about 3 years ago coloured meant non white/black so mixed race, indian origin etc etc. My friend who i was staying with was often looked funnily for being with me and i was approached and asked where i came from and why i was there spoiling their country

But even after that i will still say it is a breathtakingly beautiful country, especially western cape and if i had the option of moving there i would take it without a moments hesitation

Looking at the programme some whites are still treating black people as shit. Quotas for clubs for heaven's sake.

The breathtaking landscape and the violence is what we see from here - it's what we are presented with. I like the 7 Up series' anyway but I did find that very interesting to watch.

I don't know the details. The guy who did it isn't the easiest guy to talk to. He got on with it and we sort of left him to it!

I don't know the details. The guy who did it isn't the easiest guy to talk to. He got on with it and we sort of left him to it!"

In New Zealand they dig a pit, put the meat in and then build a fire. The meat is slow cooked and delicious. It takes planning as you can't just do it when people are hungry. I have only been to one hangi but I enjoyed it.

I'm not sure about in land but the coastal areas are gorgeous. The house prices are relatively cheap in comparison to here and thats in secure areas. The food is just scrumptious and fresh sea food is fresh and tastes great. People there are really nice and friendly. You get some idiots but you get them everywhere. If only they got their act together and got rid of the current post aparthied government for an honest and genuinely non-biased/corrupt one they may have a chance of turning it around and making it great

It hasn't even been 25 years since Apartheid ended so it's hardly surprising that change takes time. Yes, a genuine post Apartheid government would be a wonderful thing to see.
