Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Was having a conversation with someone who was in their 60s who claimed to be middle aged. Now, unless they were planning to live beyond 120 that's not middle aged. Yet I don't see it as old either let alone elderly.

I will be 51 in a couple of weeks but again I think I'm probably beyond middle aged as I doubt I'll get to 102+.

I have no idea what age 'bracket' I could be deemed as. Any ideas?

I don't think of myself as old but nor am I middle aged. It's like there's a generally ignored wilderness between middle age and old.

I mean we came up with a new word for older children who aren't yet teens - tweens.

So what could it be at the other end of the scale?

In that case I will accept I am middle age. Won't pretend to be anything I am not. I am 42 so if I live til I am 84 then yes call me middle aged. My grannie lived til she was 98 and my grandma 99 so mum is due to hit 100 and I will aim for 101 lol.

Really, aside from that middle age is the middle of your life. If that means I am middle age then fine x

If I'm honest I should call myself an OAP, but that physically hurts. Can't bring myself to say it. Even showing my buspass is torture. The only ray of light is when I travel by train and show my reduced ticket and the inspector says, "Na, no way - do you really have a card?"

I'd call myself mature. Rather mature at a push. My grandparents were pensioners.

I am so different from how they were at my age.

I know what you mean. When I think about what my mum was like at my age and I am so much younger in outlook.

I do get made to feel about 18 though everytime I go and visit my Mum, my sister says she gets the same experience as well

i dont see whats wrong with being called old. my mum was 73 when she died, yet i admired the way she looked and she was fitter than me, until she got cancer about a year before she died.

she was quite lucky though, she didnt have many health problems until she got cancer. Health problems make you feel older than what you are.

Being the upper limit now I must admit I have no wish to place myself in an age bracket. Anymore than I would like to be in a class bracket.

I think at 60 something many of us are far younger in feeling and looks than maybe people were 40 or 60 years ago. we need not to be judged by age but by how we behave perhaps.

I call is muddle aged.

It's a new age stage of life for the 40-60 year olds. It overlaps with middle age at 55-68 and over 68 is now old and over 75/80 (depending on fitness) is now elderly.

But how do others see us? I personally couldn't care less about my age but as we age we seem to become more invisible to the rest of society which seems hardly fair. We need to claim our space more.

I often think of that old US sitcom - The Golden Girls. Much better than being labelled old or elderly with all the concomitant attitudes of being 'useless' and 'past it'.

Any point can be a defining poibt. One of mine was at 19 when I became a mother. Another was at the age of 30 when I graduated.

And I say this as I have my 3rd apprentice who's the same age as I was when I started.. Bloke who taught me was 33 and he was old.. But he taught me to live.. So I say I'm coming into my own

Age is just a number.how do you know your middle age until you go through the pearl gates,to get your middle age,I think middle age is assumed to be 45' in which case I'm well past it,you could say I'm a post pensioner.but I feel as 45". Middle aged.

I'd say everyone below 30 is young.

Above that people age really differently - some in their late 40's seem more youthful than some in their mid 30's.

I'd say people in their 50's and 60's are pretty similar but again with some ageing really well and some not at all.

I was skinny and hated the way I looked, madly in love and in an abusive relationship when I was 18. I am happier with the way I look and will not allow that sort of abuse now.

Im 56 will be 57 in few weeks. NOW THAT IS FECKING OLD I THINK, but when I was young I thought ppl in 40s and 50s were middle aged and you didnt become old until you were of pensionable age

Aren't women only as old as the men they feel? So I'm 31 whoop whoop , which is a bit older than I feel so I'd say there's no.such thing as middle age. It's the time when you've matured enough to feel happy and confident with your body and don't care what others think.

It's as much to do with mental outlook as physical age though. I've known old 60 year olds and young 80 year olds.
