Following on from an earlier thread on Borgen and Nordic Noir in general, the discussion began to skirt around the subject of world cinema.

I'd love to know if anyone has any favourites or recommendations.

Could be a specific film or perhaps work by a particular director.

Guillermo Del Toro...his foreign language films, rather than his 'Hollywood' movies (though his Hollywood movies are beautifully informed by his more arthouse stuff)

Volver is a good film what with the gorgeous Penelope Cruz in it too.

Lots of good J-horror and Korean Horror out there

I love Guillermo Del Toro's work too. Pan's Labyrinth is an amazing piece of cinematography.

I'm also a fan of Asian Grindhouse films. Gory for a lot of people, but I think if you look beyond the gore, there is usually a point to it, unlike a lot of the slasher Hollywood shite that is out now.

The Korean film Old Boy is a favourite of mine, really like del Toro's stuff too, in fact a lot of the Mexican new wave stuff is good. Had anyone seen Amores Perros or Y Tu Mama Tambien?

Both have Gael Garcia Bernal in them.

Sorry was probably me that took it into Films.

So many to choose from. French and Spanish cinema has some real corkers coming out.

One of the best French films we have seen in along time was probably Point Blank.

Anything with Oliver Marchell involved is always good, like 36, he also did a great French Police drama called Baroque (spelling may vary)
