Set a budget or write a list of items?

Me im neither of those options i just go out and buy based on what i see and if i think the item is appropriate and good value for money..

Just wondering what people do when it comes to buying gifts, do you write lists of items and stick to it, or allocate a budget for each person and get more presents at reduced sale prices?

Funny my son said that .. it's not easy as I have 6 kids although two only get token gifts... But they have learned that Christmas isn't about expensive gifts x

I generally set a budget per head. This year it will be zero for a lot of people!

Well, kind of. I'm making gifts for most of the adults in my life so apart from ingredients (they're all edible gifts) time and know how are all I'll be spending.

The under 18's are all getting animal onsies. Those average at about a tenner each.

I come from a family which has always set limits according to what they can afford. And we tend to give smaller gifts that are quite personal rather than big impressive ones. So if someone can afford to spend a bit more this year and does they do so from generosity not from expectation.

My Christmas list this year reads like a joke one! Slippers, socks, scarf hat and gloves, smellies and chocolate.

Generally £20 for each person except the twins and my mum and dad, I buy whatever I see and ignore the cost

Set about writing a list but usually leave said list at home

Having a small family means I can spend a wee bit more but its not really how expensive things are its the gift of giving

Finding it hard to find unusual gifts this year tho

My parents are like that, so my sister and I have got them a weekend in Manchester and a chocolate making lesson with Green and Blacks.

I have a few adults I'll be buying a little something for this year. Including a male relative who moaned one year that he never gets socks so I always get him a multipack and get far more thanks than for anything imaginative!

I try to be as creative as possible with getting the person what they don't necessarily want, but would want if they had thought about it themselves. I don't really budget for it

Buying for friends and family I write a list, for a partner a set budget ( which I normally go over as I see that must have item).

We don't have that many to buy for, we have quite a large family but all of us decided a few years ago that Christmas was getting a little expensive. Now we just buy for the children. Of course we'll get something for our parents but generally the cut off is teenagers. There's no budget really but nobody really over spends.

I set a budget per person, Christmas hasn't really cost that much this year. Callum usually gets £200 spent on him and I spent £140 on my mum rest was £25 per person

I do a list but with a budget for each person. except my daughter who gets what ever I can thinkof and don't suggest to other people.

but my family on mums side the cut off is 16. there's so many of us. except special birthdays

and my dad's side is 18 except special birthdays.

I make a list of bits I need to remember to get during the week and then take that, but then the rest of the shopping is based on my budget that week - if I cant afford any more, I don't get it
