Ford or vauxhall. About 2006/2007 plate as cars that are about 6 years old are reliable as you know they last. Secondly those cars last for 20 years. So you should have for about 14 years f you look after it.

Saab 9-3 for two grand you can pick up a mint example. If you're doing big mileage go for the diesel if not then go for the 2.0SE.

find your self a Subaru legacy or legacy outback. Brilliant cars go for years and never break down provided you dont go for the sports turbo models which have a tendency to require new waste gates every 50000 miles or so...

And you cant change the front light bulbs without dismantling the front end!

Costs about £800 + VAT and the bulb for xenon models!

Steer well clear of this, we had one and in the first 6 months FORD had it more than we did and in the end we told them to keep it! problem after problem it was!

From 2004 they thankfully started to put access flaps in the front wheel arches so you can change them yourself (I did mine two weeks ago on my winter car which is a Megane hatchback).

Mine is plagued with MAF and EGR faults despite me changing both parts three times in the past few months. It's a bloody hateful thing...lol

If you ain’t bothered about image you could go down the other route…….. …..where £700-£800 will buy you an decent Nissan Almera that will provide you with pretty much everything you’d get paying £2000 for another make and model that fits your requirements……

My megan needed bulbs. Got from halfords and let them fit it lol. 25 mins he was laying under the car in pooring rain. Laughed? ?? I nearly wet myself lol. I did say to him before he started if he done one before as I knew there was an access flap and very fiddly to do. He just grunted an said yea I'm a fitter.. how hard can it be? ?

Also was plaqued with electrical problems. .... wiredest one was headlights wouldn't turn off ..... was diagnosed as radio at fault! !!!

theres plenty of room in the C R V as the seats fold down better in the bad weather to you dont get stuck in a 4 wheel drive car , there like the golf bullet proof , had mine 4 years .

That's down to the canbus system. It's usually a fault in the radio, rev counter or drivers window switch. Fixing it can be a pain too because often the parts require a proxy alignment after they've been replaced and unless you have the correct software that's a job only Renault can do at a cost of £160 for a 30 second job!

I've only kept mine because its worth bugger all! The dogs and kids have ruined the inside and the engine and electrics are starting to play up. Like I said previously it has an apparently incurable MAF and EGR fault and in the last month I've had to change the injector seals and due to one grumbling rear wheel bearing, both rear discs and a full set of rear pads, because Renault press the bearings into the discs! Not to mention the rear exhaust hanger constantly failing and the lower engine mount too.

It'll be replaced in February with either a Saab 9-3 or another Alfa.

Here and there

If I was going to spend £2000 on a car, I'd get a mk2 Golf GTI, one that's as close to factory spec as possible. The price is about as low as it's going to get for a decent one so you could either run it for a year and sell it for the same price or keep it and watch the price rise.
