Just a daft question really,

Of late I'm getting pm's which just quote a post I made on here, occasionally it says 'good post' or 'cracking comment'.

So do you respond to these pm's?

I have a few times and have found they either get the wrong idea or feel led on

I always reply to messages like that even if it's just with a chuckle-chuckle arf-arf chortle-chortle gaffaw-gaffaw...... or if it's to someone north of the border with a " Tee-Mac-Hee"

I did PM someone last week but only to offer advice on a medical condition that was too long and personal to leave in a thread, otherwise I think all comments about a thread should be made on the thread. That's just my oppinion obviously but some people have had nasty messages which is not on.

I'm thinking its a way of getting to talk to you. If your sent a pm with one of your old comments on it your more likely to reply to it, than just a message from some bloke

Yes as both guys had messaged me about a comment I had made on a forum post but got it totally wrong so I soon put them right, they were however the reason I hid my verification's as they went through them

Had a couple. They don't bother me to be honest, but I suppose if the person started sending repeat messages it would be a bit annoying.

What I'm not so keen on are random people who don't post their replies in forums and only PM instead. Why not just contribute openly ?

the forums are a tool to make friends, maybe because a post has sparked an interest or your post has helped or clarified something. People message me, either agreeing or disagreeing with an opinion I have posted,

in some cases because they don't want others to know their views.

All communication is good communication, and should be encouraged.

I did this once to give some advice on a matter that was not for public at large to read. When i get messages i read and if of no interest delete.

probably because thye are banned, or dont want open forummers to see they have views that are contraversial, as that can limit the amount of people they can lie to at a later date lol

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

If they are complimenting my post then I reply thanking them. If they've used it to ask to meet and they are not within my preferences then I ignore it. If they are abusive (rarely happened tbh) then I report it.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I will sometimes respond in private to a comment if I want to say something particular to that person. They either respond or delete.

I get messages on some of my posts, either a thought, support or something negative. The abusive ones can be annoying. If I have never seen the sender on the forum I just assume they are banned, a lurker, unable to post yet or not wanting to share their view in public. If it's rude, contradictory or supportive I think it should remain on the forum.

Titz Towers, North Notts

I send a polite message back. Generally I've found them to be genuine complimentary messages with no ulterior motive. Sadly.

I sometimes want to message you because of your musings, but cannot because of your goalposts or whatever they're called.

I ways reply, never had a problem.

I sometimes mail people directly about posts if it's something private. If they are offended I'm sure they would say so.

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

I occasionally get PMs off the back of my forum posts, usually complimentary which I always respond to. Once had a bit of an arsey message where someone took issue with something I posted so I just reported it and blocked the person - I personally wouldn't say anything in PM that I wouldn't post in public if in disagreement with a poster

It's the one's who think they're currying favour by saying something snidey about another forumite that make me laugh.

They backtrack really quickly when they realise you are not only not impressed but also turned off by such petty attempts at point scoring!

I may have a difference of opinion with someone in the forum but not only do I respect their right to that opinion but I also give credit for standing by it in a public discussion.

I gauge my response depending on whether I like the other person's online persona.

For those who were in chat last night would new I had a pm message last night and could retrieve it lol. But think a lot of people were smiling at me and my frustration of not working out what I was supposed to say.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I've had people pm by accident through here.

But I have also had one or two chancers try it on. It never works. I come on the forums to chat/debate.

When I want a meet I go looking for it.

i've pm ed sometimes if the person on the thread is getting grief and needs some support without getting into a shouting match with ignorant trolls who sometimes show their ugly heads

If something is a delicate matter ill pm, if not ill say it in the forum, if I pm on a thread then I don't expect a reply, sometimes it's nice when I do but it's not the reason I pm
