I can't stand this type of music, as 90% of the time you can't hear a word from the singer, even if he's screaming.

All the rock, heavy rock, punk rock, just sounds the same to me and generally depressing unless the lads could head bang to it.

I'm more of a easy listening uplifting music person. I love the Lighting Seeds, which just shows my taste in music lol

It's hardly contentious, more like a well-known fact that Page had a predilection for young girls, Lori Maddox being the most 'well-known'.

I love Zeppelin but Page was a better writer/arranger/producer than he was a guitarist.

And I fucking hate 'Stairway...'!

No problem! Lest we forget, without taking the thread too far off topic, Elvis...paedophile, Charlie Chaplin...paedophile, Jerry Lee Lewis...paedophile, Page...paedophile. And that's just the ones that didn't try too hard to hide the fact!

You don't have to be a great guitarist to be influential and Stairway isn't even the best songs on LZ IV, let alone one of his bedt compositions. It's just the most well known because US radio has been wanking itself senseless over it for 40 years. Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, even Fool in the Rain are way better tunes.

I said I was a fan, got pretty much everything they ever did, including a shit load of bootlegs, saw them at Knebworth, seen Plant more times than I care to remember, saw The Firm, saw Them Crooked Vultures, even saw Jason Bonham a few times in a little known band called Airrace back in the early 80's when he was a pompous little prick compared to how nice he appears to be nowadays.

However, I've still got a sense of perspective and have never rated Page as a guitar player but, as I said, he's a brilliant writer, arranger and producer.

Also, let's face it, record sales don't mean that much, Hootie and the Blowfish sold millions and they're the worst band that ever drew breath

Had a drink with Rob Plant, once, as I worked with one of his schoolmates, Scoop. Top bloke and very funny. Can take or leave their music, however, remember the '85 live aid gig, where Phil Collins joined them on stage, playing drums, Jimmy Page was that wasted, even RB couldn't believe it, watch it on youtube! They wouldn't let it go on the dvd lol

he is arguably one of the most influential guitarists in exisitance and stairway one of his finest compositions

You don't have to be a great guitarist to be influential and Stairway isn't even the best songs on LZ IV, let alone one of his bedt compositions. It's just the most well known because US radio has been wanking itself senseless over it for 40 years. Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot, even Fool in the Rain are way better tunes.

all fair points ok, he is a great guitarist AND very influential. I said stairway is ONE of his finest. LZ IV is a fantastic album from start to finish

I'm not going toe to toe with a fanboy

All that needs to be said is "Hendrix". End Of

I see your "Hendrix" and raise you "Rory Gallagher"

Rory, currently blasting from my sound system, simply breath taking"

If I could have a fantasy band (like the fantasy football), would have hendrix and slash on guitar... not sure how they would be on the piano... perhaps eric burdon on vocals, perhaps the rest of war as the "band"..... and Reggie Watts on human beat box and vocals....

In fact I am so pissed I am going to start a whole thread on Reggie Watts!!!

I am with the Hinckley contingent on this, he is a great poducr and sloppy guitarist

Not going to even have a go at the plagiarism as that is a given for guitarists of his generation

And I was serious fanboy as a 13 year old onwards, nearly got to see the, in Germany before they quit

Cried my eyes out when Bonham died and used to copy pictures from Melody Maker of him onto my bedroom door

But.. Even stairway... He recorded at last three solos and just put in the one that fitted the track

If memory serves me right.. big Jim Sullivan taught him all he knew...

"Great band but I am suprised Jimmy Page hasn't been talked to re: Saville enquiry

What a contentious thing to say? eh!

Would you care to elaborate ?

It's hardly contentious, more like a well-known fact that Page had a predilection for young girls, Lori Maddox being the most 'well-known'.

I love Zeppelin but Page was a better writer/arranger/producer than he was a guitarist.

And I fucking hate 'Stairway...'!

Sloppy.. Without a doubt, he seems to throw the Guitar parts down in order to get back to the booth.

The best musician in LZ was JPJ.

Whenoy listen to the tracks do you think he is playing behind beat on his solos, or playing ahead of the beat on his riffs?

Anyways.. When he strays outside the pentatonic minor on his solos (the open G meiodies, the blackwater rip and and the Kashmir riff do not count). He tends to go up and down the major scale (err hound dog anyone?)

Like I said before.. A great hero of mine when growing up, wrote some cracking songs...

But we had to wait for EVH to take guitar out of the pentatonic minor to a whole new level

Maybe he did just throw them down, maybe he didn't but either way the guitar is a quarter of a fantastic quartet and my original post was about zeppelin, not Jimmy's guitar playing. It fits tge music and hell i wouldn't have minded catching one of their live shows and sone extended versions of the songs.

John Paul Jones, fantastic musician. Love his playing. Honestly i've never considered whether he's playing ahead or behind. His riffs, solos always seemed to be right where they should, you?

Again i don't mind what notes he play, just how he plays them. EVH another legend and one with many an imitator

"I can't stand this type of music, as 90% of the time you can't hear a word from the singer, even if he's screaming.

All the rock, heavy rock, punk rock, just sounds the same to me and generally depressing unless the lads could head bang to it.

I'm more of a easy listening uplifting music person. I love the Lighting Seeds, which just shows my taste in music lol

Clearly no taste in music then haha

Unless you saw LZ before the disastrous '77 tour, you wouldn't have missed much! All the reunions have been shambolic, apart from the last one, which was tuned down by about a tone and a half to accommodate Plant's voice.

When Plant's son died, he lost interest in the band (understandably) and when Bonham died, the soul of the band died, not even Jason can replace that.

Well he is a bit older now lol.

More than understandable really. Always wondered how it would have panned out had Bohnam not died, was there more to come?

Page was smacked off his tits for the majority of the making of 'In Through the Out Door', so who knows whether they'd have made any more music?

But then 'Fool in the Rain', 'All of my Love', 'I'm Gonna Crawl' and 'In the Evening' are, in my opinion, some of the best songs they ever did, so maybe Page taking a back seat for a change wasn't a bad thing?

smack is never a good thing, but he may have come good. All great songs, but i think bands can work fantastically well when all members have a hand in creating
