A Secret Hideaway In the caravan of love

Loading the credit cards and then regretting it when the bill arrives in the New Year.

I did last year, so this year I will only be spending what I have.

Credit cards are for business use only and have always been. Wish more people have learned to spend only on things they can really aford.

Titz Towers, North Notts

I've had a couple of unexpected presents to buy. I blame my step-brother. When they first had a kid, I bought the kid a 1/4 sovereign for when they are 18. His wife is pregnant again, so I'm repeating the trick. With the price of gold, I wish I'd bought them both a telly instead.

No. I only have crystal to buy for (and her birthday in December too) and will give her a contribution towards her spending on her family. Christmas doesn't cost me much really.

I had to get a new oven this year so my savings went so I've got an interest free credit card which my dad looks after and I have to give him the payments each month so I can't use it any more and I can't not pay what I need to to get the balance down before the interest free runs out x

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I put everything on my credit card: I get John Lewis vouchers back and use them to buy presents, at least in part.

I overspend in January when I see coats, jackets and bedlinen on sale. I am holding on to the thought that I don't need another coat (unless it's a long black leather one - Caz knows the one) and I should only buy jackets if I finally find one in the right shade or brown and/or blue. My sister says I don't need any more bedlinen but she's wrong.

I pay my credit card off in full every couple of weeks. I just use it like I would a debit card but get vouchers back from using it. I only spend what I've got, if I've got nothing then I don't spend it. Christmas will be simple but fun.

Simple and fun is all that's needed. The amount of people I know who panic because what they have bought for people/ children is not enough in there eyes is sad.

Family and fun does not mean getting into debt and it's a shame that modern day makes some feel they should spend what they don't have.

Merry debt free crimbo everyone.

I agree with 99% of that post. Only bit I don't agree with is what you said about people worrying what they get people as yes I agree the expense has gone ridiculous over a number of years, which is sad. However I want the other people to know I have thought of them when I bought a gift and that they actually like/enjoy it.

Hottiebottie had the right idea and I know savings can get eaten up in emergencies but just an idea...

Instead of credit cards and paying it off over a year, why not save over the year in an ISA and earn a little interest on it.
