"I dont think they should be scrapped, as above, some people will find hospital quite stressful, whether there as a patient or a visitor. But, I do think they should be moved somewhere so other people going to the hospital dont have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get through a door - thats the part that infuriates me."

Agree with this. Smoking areas should be away from entrances. Also undercover and with plenty of bins/ashtrays. X

"There are quite alot of doctors and nurses who smoke, so banning it wont work. I would much rather have my surgeon all relaxed after a ciggie than being a right grump because some bloody dogooder says he cant have one outside. Wobbly hands and grumpy staff isnt what i want when in hospital. "

It didnt happen at first because they forgot then wondered why he was going doolally without any help. Patches eventually given and no problems

"As long as the offer nicotine replacement therapy then it should be banned from hospital grounds. This should include staff. Nothing worse than having to walk through a band of smokers outside a hospital entrance " But they dont..... This sounds daft but the only reason i managed to go out with a nurse to where they all hide, along with the doctors....was because my main visitor was one of my best mates....she is the hospitals main social worker. Those who couldnt give a shit about patient welfare, were worried i would say summat I wouldnt have done but its weird they changed their minds and took me out after previously saying no....

"I bull don't smoke, but I have nothing against people who do and I don't agree with the ban on hospital grounds. When my grandmother past away everyone was out side and my parents, grandad and cousin were smoking. Now who's going the be the heartless person to say stop that you can't do it? I will cause more trouble if someone tried that tbh. I agree with smoking shelters tho " if they provided proper snoking shelters or areas it would look far better for the hospital

"As the debate sparks-up under heightened media attention, MSN are running a poll asking the above question… So what do ya reckon…. ? " No ! Like another poster said will they ban Greggs and stop selling sweets and fizzy drinks too? Obesity is a bigger problem in the UK and the do gooders Should ask for a ban on fast food outlets and better education on binge eating instead. Imagine if a patient had to leave the hospital premises because of the smoking ban and collapsed or suddenly got ill? Imagine the resources used by the NHS just to get that patient back into the hospital again. It's a stupid idea to ban smoking in hospitals. Maybe in a place like North Korea it might sound a good idea but in a democracy that advocates freedom of choice it's ridiculous. My opinion of course.

So why is cannabis illegal ?" Too many people (tobacco and alcohol industries) have too much to lose. We are smokers and always considerate but woe betide anyone that comes and sits outside near us then has the cheek to moan about the smoke. Personally if I (male) had to choose one to keep or make legal it would be but realisticly people should be able to make their own choices to a point as lets face it making things illegal just makes it harder to get hold of and more impure therefore dangerous but never ever will stop it. Cigs give you cancer, alcohol destroys lives as bad as any drug known to man. Skunk would have to be regulated as too much can cause physcosis. The old chesnut of being a gateway drug is a load of claptrap. Cigs and drink are gateway drugs as you try them first and then try others if that way inclined anyway.

"Why do we have to ban everything. Its all getting abit 1984 for me. What's wrong with personal choice" Personal choice is fine. Kill yourself by any means available. If smoking is your chosen method, fine. It's slower and more expensive than some methods but it's your choice. Just don't involve innocent bystanders, the elderly or children for example.

What makes me laugh, certainly at a local hospital, and most likely at most hospitals, is the amount of noxious shit pumped out by car exhaust fume ON SITE. Not helped by the endless circling for a rare parking spot ( whilst the huge, and free, staff car park is vastly underused. Are there any plans to make all motorists park off site? Doubt it.

"Maybe if there weren't so many selfish smokers it wouldn't be an issue. Car fumes has nothing to do with the issue of smoking other than to deflect attention." Is there any other sort of smoker? The worst are the ones who insist 'I don't smoke anywhere near my children' yet are happy to infect other people's children with their carcinogenic fug. All the while, other people are infecting their kids.
