I just wondered if people who misuse this Latin word know what it means? We see it a lot in the forum and it may look as if it should be spelt this way.

It means "and so on" and should be spelt etc which is shortened from etcetera.

I did. You were pointing out how it should be spelt and what it was short for. My point is, even if it is spelt wrong the meaning is still the same so if you can still tell what they mean why be so pedantic?

If you're going to be that pedantic I'm going to do it right back to you.

The example you gave 'ect' isn't misuse it's misspelling.

So aren't they using it right but just spelling it wrong?

If so, despite spelling it wrong yet using it right, doesn't that prove in itself that they do understand its meaning?

Not looking for an argument but you seem to be avoiding the question. Interesting that you took it as an insult.

If I put ect in the right context for 'and so on' would you know what was meant by it? And ifso would it matter that iI hadn't spelt it etc?

According to my pedantic teacher, using it twice is incorrect usage. He always insisted that it meant "and the rest" and so the second one was meaningless.

Sigh. Yes. It's also evolved to become an English word - check the ENGLISH dictionary if you like.

Most words evolve from other languages - take 'fuck' for example.

In the English usage you'll more often find it as etcetera - one word.

Google is our friend. Apparently they're synonymous, but et al appears to mean "and others" rather than "and the rest". I wouldn't put money on it though.

Ad infinitum is another example of a Latin word which is used in English. Postscript has Latin origins but has evolved.

I see the Latin expression et cetera came from an earlier Greek one meaning "and the others" presumably suggesting all such things, rather than the less defined et al meaning just and others. Right, I need to get out more!

I think most would say that would be regarded as a Latin phrase whereas etc is in common usage in the English language.

English dictionary here says:

"usage: et cetera appears in English writing mostly in its abbreviated form, etc. The expression and et cetera is redundant."

I don't have a life until the afternoon, so I can argue with the best of them.

You corrected Yoni stating it WAS a Latin word. I corrected you by stating it IS a Latin word. The point is, is that it hasn't stopped being a Latin word .

Other Languages also use this LATIN word . Doesn't exactly give it much credence as an English word just that we, like millions of others, use it .

English has a rich tapestry of words derived from many languages. Latin is one of those languages and you can see this clearly in the church, in the legal system and in medicine. Some words/phrases have changed like postscript (removal of um) and others like ad finitum haven't.

BTW argue that ad finitum is a phrase and etc. isn't, is quite poor because even with my education, "and so on" has never been one word. So our above arguments with the use of word have become void .

Guess again, but I do have my own room in this place and it does have a lot of my stuff in, just all vanilla, nothing exciting before the peeps at the back shout 'Butt plug!'

"Do you mean do they realise 'etc' means 'etcetera' ?!

Exactly...as I stated in my OP "

so, let me figure this out, cuz im getting lost by the circles people seem to be going in.

the OP complains about people misusing, or misspelling etc/ect, we cant quite figure it out as the title is misspelt itself-correct?

IF the word ect is used, then i would generally take it as read that the user knows why they are using it.

if, however, you could show me different, please point me in the direction fo the posts that have used it in the wrong context.

"Come on someone must know its a classic!!"

There was a sketch on Saturday Night Live where Billy Crystal plays a Travel Agent who is the Aunt of Yul Bryner. Full drag, but with the bald head. She (he?) answers the phone saying "Travel etcetera!...No you cannot fly there directly....you have to chaaaange in Atlantah!" Nobody has ever come close to his impersonation.
