oh this is tricky cause it's open to how the young lady, or whoever heard it, took you comment.

on the face of it no but some people can be hyper-sensitive to comments and take whats said out of context from how they are meant

If we like other peoples smells, we usually say wow you smell nice - what are you wearing.. love to get that for the other half...

Its a compliment, but not directly towards someone to take it the wrong way.

I always say it when people come in to my vets smelling good. I also compliment them on particular articles of clothing..

I think I am a friendly person and usually by the time they have gone in to see the vet I know all sorts of things about their health /families /kids /animals/holidays etc..

I have been there a long time and they really dont seem to mind.

These days people can be so stiff its lovely to compliment people and make them smile.

It's okay to say people are too sensitive there are some places times and people where personal comments and observations need to be kept to nil.

As you may have gleened OP it does depend on how you said it. As a comment in general its ok in my opinion. But if you were sniffing her close, rubbing your inner thigh and wolf whistling it can be taken the wrong way

It's a sad world when you can't make a simple compliment without worrying if the person was offended.

I get complimented, usually on my nails or perfume by shop assistants quite often and it puts a smile on my face.

but I have given similar compliments and received a funny look.

I for one find it difficult to compliment somebody I don't know.

I complemented someone who worked for a company that I used to work for. and she complained. and I got a disciplinary for the trouble.

all I said was she smelt nice. and smiled. being polite. nothing sordid.

it then became worse as when we were due to finish her fella decided to confront me and started pushing me around.

couldn't believe how extreme it became.

so im sorry.... but you all smell bad. lol

it sounds like you think there is a problem with it, maybe you secretly fancy her.

In normal circumstances it is a simple compliment.

In a work environment, especially if you are on different levels, it could be taken as inappropriate.

I always tell people if I think they smell nice. If she brings it up with you or anyone else saying she felt uncomfortable, you can say you have been thinking about perfume as a gift for your wife and were wondering what the one you could smell was called? Innocent enough
