BBW stands for Big Beautiful Woman.

In general terms though its used to describe a woman of a larger frame who carries excess weight.

The 'beautiful' if of course subjective and men often use the term as a nice way of saying 'i accept fat chicks'

Some women hate the term and wont be stereotyped, and others embrace the termonology. Each to their own

My comment was responding to, partially disagreeing with, femme's post saying that the term BBW, with the second B meaning beautiful, is bullshit because not all are.

I agree that not all big people are beautiful, the same as not all slim people are beautiful. However, some women are BBW so it's not a bullshit term.

Hopefully that's clear. If not I'm bowing out because I don't know how to make it clearer that I am not slating large women. I *am* a large woman, just not a BBW. That doesn't mean I think that no large women are beautiful.

Fair enough I just describe myself as large, with a jelly belly and neither beautiful nor a paper bag case.

Mostly, using BBW to denote oneself as a fattie is fine. It's when the few start foaming at the mouth about the insecure lardies calling themselves beautiful and how they think all fat women are disgusting and ugly and all the rest, that it becomes a problem. Some people take it a bit literally and some think fat birds should be in sackcloth and ashes and kept out of public view. Then the term BBW just gives them ammunition.

Personally I am fat and I'd rather be called fat than a BBW. But only if there's a reason for mentioning it at all other than to try to insult and hurt.

Exactly. Bit it very rarely is used as a descriptive term. On here it's used to upset and offend, mainly by men who think they willget an easy lay and their ego is bruised when the 'most bbeautiful, curvy woman they have ever aren't turns them down. Suddenly they become too fat to fuck in the space of a message.

Let's face it. Fatties are the last frontier in physical attributes it's ok to bash because forthe vast majority its a choice to be fat (yes yes sine illnesses and medication can cause unwanted weight ggain but for most we knowwhat it is that causes it). There was a tthread the other day about what mean things you can say to a woman and I'd say 90% of them were about the woman's size.

I think its because some people need to be defined and accepted by someone...even if it's just adopting a silly label. I use the term because it's easier, but I'm so much more...being fat is only one part of who I am but it's one of the easiest ways to put me into a category...and also one of the easiest things to use to try to put me down, which is something else people are so keen to do!

So many on here get hung up on labels in some way shape or form...whether wearing them or hating them. I guess we all use them in some way shape or form but they are all subjective and people are so keen to use them to direct negativity instead of looking at the person as a whole and seeing that being fat is just one part of the person and not the whole picture...whether beautiful or not!

I don't have a problem with it to be honest, but I do have a problem with people using the word beautiful when they clearly are not, irrespective of size, again though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it isnt size specific...look round on self professed BBW (some) profiles and they use terms such as skinny minnie and stick insects to describe women of a slimmer frame....its an interesting subject.

That annoys me too. Large women know what it means to have derogatory names diected at them (us), whether they let it bother them or not. That in itself should be a good enough reason not to call slimmer women derogatory names.

Basically, however, I lay some responsibility with those influences that make women insecure about their size and looks. Sure, the women are ultimately responsible for their own sense of self, happiness and behaviour. However, a lot of women have seriously damaged self-esteem and trying to overcome that is swimming against the tide. It can be a long journey to self-acceptance and, sadly, many never make it.

I'd like to see all women be kinder to one another, but I'd also like world peace.

I think the real origin of the expression was back in the 70s when a fashion magazine celebrating larger women was launched in response to the media precept that slim was beautiful and anything bigger than a size zero was unattractive. The magazine was called BBW Magazine - not sure if it's still in circulation.

I don't use the term myself but have no problem with women who do. It's now just a collection of letters that represent a body type. Much like RAC stands for a car recovery service - I bet many people don't even know what those letters stand for. But they probably know what they represent.

How did I miss the point? You said some people get 'offended' when a person describes themselves as beautiful when clearly they're not beautiful(in your eyes). I can't understand why anyone would be offended at someone's self appraisal of their own attractiveness. They can call themselves beautiful if they want to - whether you (or anyone else) thinks they really are is subjective and by using your own eyes and judgement you decide whether to approach the person or not.

Having said that, very few women who use the term BBW actually think they are beautiful - they just use the term BBW as a short-hand expression meaning 'I'm not thin' so people can pass them by if big women aren't their cup of tea.
