Driving in Bristol

Watching a program on ch.4 about CCTV, traffic wardens & the mayor of Bristols efforts to stop people driving in to the city.

Seeing the mayors actions and response to the public made me wonder how arrogant a twat this guy was but also, do we really live in a democracy?

Anyone else watching it and thinking the same or is it just me

Our new mayor is a knobhead. ...he loves the sound of his own voice and isnt happy unless hes on radio tv and in the news 24.7. ...the sooner his cctv finds him to be a dodgy ass the better ....

trouble is if you are stuck in traffic because a bus has crashed having to manoevre around a car that was parked in the dedicated bus lane, would you feel sorry for the persecuted driver then?

I think the traffic in Bristol is appalling, and things need to be done. We've had RPZs in York for years and also shut off the city centre all day and it works pretty well. If people don't want to use the multiple Park and Ride schemes then they can't then moan about the city centre car park charges.

However I believe the Bristol mayor was shoving through stuff without considering how the fall-out would be dealt with.

yes i would. have you driven behind a bus driver? They are the most inconsiderate drivers on the road. The number of times i have seen them bully their way in and out of lanes is ridiculous and the only reason there isn't a crash is cause the poor driver behind them is forced out the way or hits the brakes hard! Bus drivers aren't as angelic as you may think.

not saying they are angelic, i am saying that there wouldnt have been a hypothetical crash if the hypothetical car hadnt parked illegally in the bus lane.

considering the amount of bus lanes there are (particularly where i am) the frequency of their use & the driving ettiquete of bus drivers personally i'd get rid of them

Having lived in Bristol most of my life and having watched the programme last night i actually think what he is trying to do is a good thing !

The problem is not the drivers its the sheer amount of traffic and car owners who are not willing to walk an extra half a mile to get to their destination.

Cleaner air for our children and less accidents and fatalities can be nothing but a good thing. It is not a right to drive a car etc it is a privilege.

I live in Leeds another grid locked city,,, Leeds has for the last few years made it more difficult to drive around, hoping the difficulties would force people onto public transport, Leeds has just extended the hours you need to pay for parking hoping it can raise more money to fill a budget hole, hmmm interesting Leeds. you don t want cars but you need them,

I think I heard the mayor of Bristol say he wants people to not use their cars use alternate ways, well my question and i always ask the same question of people that would wish that people would stop using their cars,

Where will you find the finances to fill the shortfall in your budget,? Bristol as with many other cities charges for parking, kerching parking tickets, kerching,, its all well and good having everyone cycle or using otherforms of transport wheres the money coming from,?

The authorities always like to say that parking fines etc are not money making exercises. If that is the case, why do they not donate the money raised to charity?

I don't always believe stats as they can be manipulated to show a positive light on a situation.

What the mayor is doing, or at least how it came across to me, is flexing his eco-power authorative control and force people to do what they dont want to.

As for RPZ's i'll agree they work. Only people who live there park there. That's fine but can anyone explain why the already hard done motorist has to pay more money for parking outside their own home why are the home/car owners being charged extra for a permit they didn't want 8n the first place

i do like your little caveats of (mostly)

Take Bristol for example, knowing that the residents didn't want RPZ's he went ahead and did it. So can they have him removed instantly or do they have to put up with it till next election?

Didn't vote for him, won't vote for him next time either.

Bristol policy is to force people onto the trams, which don't exist! Been in the planning stage for at least 30 years! Then the same council complain that people don't go into the town centre to do their shopping, yes you can go shopping on the bus but how many pairs of shoes can you carry back to the park and ride on a bus

i dont see how its selfish on the part of motorists. It can be deemed selfish on the part of the mayor forcing through proposals a majority dont want

That, as I said above, is representative democracy. Voters don't get everything they want - sometimes they don't even get everything they were promised but unless you have a plebiscite on every single issue, it's the only way to work.

As previously, you can always vote the guy out (if enough people agree with you).

Just as aside. I was involved in organising a controlled parking zone (as opposed to a residents parking zone) some years back. The difference is that controlled allows both residents and visitors to park.

A survey of motorists leaving their cars in what had previously been a free to park area showed c 60% weren't actually even from Glasgow. Residents couldn't park anywhere near their homes between 07.30 and 18.00.

A modest parking charge in conjunction with a maximum stay of 3 hours was enough to change motorists habits. I accept it pushed the problem a bit further away from the city centre but residents there had the chance to vote on proposal to have controlled parking there too and chose not to.

They regret it now.

Driving in Bristol is really ridiculous! BUT…

They are very heavy handed with the tickets though. A friend has received many tickets for ‘getting into the bus lane to early before it turns into a regular road again.’ Surely there needs to be some discretion.

When driving into Bristol in the mornings that I do have to all I see empty bus lanes with the odd bus now and then which has hardly any people on it. if they want us to use busses they need to be greatly improved. Bristol and its surrounding areas buses and services are dreadful. I know of places that are running busses that are over 20 years old!! They are old, filthy, and in a poor state! Many have windows that leak when it rains and I’ve often seen them broken down in the bus lanes! They also don’t stop in good or handy places and the routes make hardly any sense.

Surely until any of this is looked at people will continue to drive into the city in their own cars, where they know they are safe, dry and warm and will reach the destination that they desire even if it’s a half an hour after a bus may have ‘promised’
