The school where my kids go offers trips that cost a couple of thousand pounds. Thankfully they also offer cheaper alternatives too.

They wanted £500 each for a trip to Krakow, I just laughed and told them when my kids go there we'll stay with my uncle for free...

When my daughter was in 6th form they were offered two trips. One to LA, costing nearly £2000, and one to Iceland, costing £600. And because no-one could afford them, they were both cancelled.

I know schools have got to recoup their costs but surely a reasonably priced trip that happens is better than a very expensive one that doesn't.

Also, charity trips are usually cheaper DIY.

Sorry dear child we have had to make cut backs due to every one being shafted these days we are the lucky ones that can just aford to put clothes on ur back feed you heat the house now you feel the need to ask for more at this time of the year we are having to borrow money for ur xmas but ok we will see what else we can do without in the house and have a sale see what we can do for you sort of speach may be needed

Yeah it's just infeasible not many people have 3500 spare for one child to go away with school

They are doing the same trip up at the school my eldest daughter went too, one of the mums that i am friends with her son is going, but he has got to do fund raising to go. Which i thought was a brilliant idea of hers, I think he has another year before he goes.

Having been part of a similar trip, but to Kenya.... I can confirm that staff pay the same fees, the children's prices don't subsidise the staff in any way - it's not allowed by law.

A lot of the children involved in ours carried out fundraising events in the local community to raise money towards the cost (£2800)

That isn't usual.

Usually the organising company charges a 'donation' per student with a requirement of a certain staff:student ratio. Providing a minimum amount of students sign up the staff required go free.

There are good providers and ripoff providers. This is clearly a ripoff provider.

No they're cleverer than that (the companies or 'charities').

The company provides the staff place for 'free' providing the ratio (usually 1:8) have paid the required 'donation'.

So 8 kids donate £3k each and the company provides one free staff place. So in theory the kids haven't been raising anything towards staff costs because the staff place was 'free'. Bullshit of course but that's how it's done.

There are good providers too but they're usually smaller and harder to organise.

I would have to conclude then that perhaps if this is the case, in this instance, the school governors should be made aware and change provider. I doubt any would want their school to be seen as a school that 'cons' parents out of cash to subsidise teacher's trips!

As I said before, in my experience staff have paid in full themselves.

To be fair it's not that the school is conning anyone. What they will see is a professional, well established provider with insurance, track record and free places for teachers - which is a big issue considering that if teachers don't go the trip doesn't happen.

The issue lies with the providers.

I would be more concerned at the amount of money being used up in admin that could instead be used for charitable benefits. For a little extra effort it's possible to do something far more worthwhile for much less.

I'll also throw in what I always say to these kinds if expeditions - what the fuck makes people think people can't build their own houses?

I did a Peru trip that I needed to raise £3k for a few years back...the trip itself cost about £1400, the rest went to the charity...it was hard work fund raising, but very satisfying. I think kids would struggle without a lot of family support with the fundraising but what an achievement if they did it. I know a couple of local schools doing similar - no idea of take up on it
