After reading a variety of Christmas threads it seems that the festive season has become just another chore for a lot of people!

How can we get the magic back?

gave up on it years ago ...does not remotely interest me ..infact i usually volunteer to work it to allow those that do enjoy it the time off with their families

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

People of my generation had most of the things they needed, and at birthdays and Christmas some of the things they wanted,

With our country becoming more affluent

I find that a lot of people get more of what they want as soon as they want it, so the thrill of those special occasions is diminished as its more the norm,

Seriously, it needs to be more about people and less about things. Food and toy adverts start before Hallowe'en and the shops are full of Christmas stuff at the same time.

How can an event that drags on for months and revolves around excesses of everything, to the extent it's difficult to appreciate anything, feel special?

It's like some big competition now.

After all it is only a glorified Sunday roast and a chance to give your loved ones something nice.

I find that setting a price cap on the amount you can spend makes it all less stressful. Especially if you make it a fiver or a tenner - can be a touch more challenging but ultimately more fun! @;-)

The people who can do everything to excess do, and appreciate none of it.

Many run up debt that spoils the next few months.

And those without the means to buy out entire shops of cheap plastic over-priced tat are made to feel like failures.

I love Christmas! I love all the little things that make it special and since having kids it has just been even more wonderful.

I don't spend silly money, I can't anyway but not sure I would if I could!

I think Christmas spirit is what we need - even just saying merry Christmas to the person who serves you in a shop when they've probably been dealing with grumpy people all day.

agree wholeheartedly!! People who start going on about it so early in the year just make it worse for those of us who aren't really fussed about it. In fact if the hype didn't start till about two weeks before, I'd probably enjoy it more.

I think Christmas can never be as it was when we were young the excitement and expectation one has when small.

We didnt expect much because there was no advertising , we still received a pillow case full of bits and it was great to be surrounded by my family. I was an only child. We progressed to our own kids and fun but they grown up now

There will be no grandkids so for us its all over .

Xmas is now just another day to get through.

TV and other methods of advertising run parents into huge debt which I have always felt ridiculous. we do not need to compete with anyone. these days they get stuff throughout the year also so really nothing is needed.

Remember it is Christmas...not xmas...thats the commercial side...

Bring the magic and way you can...it loses something once your kid grow up...so adopted a kid and be Santa for a day...
