A lonely Christmas

A recent post about xmas got me thinking. This will be my 1st Christmas on my own without a partner . Or someone to wake up too . Or buy a present for in 28 years . I have no idea how I will feel when I wake up alone on Christmas day .At the moment I am dreading Christmas but know there is a lot of people on here will be the same and been through that first xmas alone . So I suppose my question is "How do cope with it " ?

You don't have to be lonely. Get up and work in a soup kitchen, go visit the sick. I always wake up on my own Christmas day. Only you can stop yourself feeling lonely

In my opinion you can feel more alone when "with someone" than actually when you are. Spend the money you would have done on OH on something special for yourself. Try and enjoy it

You justvdo. Don't dwell on things and don't feel sorry for yourself. Are you spending the day with family or friends? I go out for lunch both days but have learnt to cope with it the rest of the time. Try to enjoy x

I have woken up on Christmas Day on a bed made out of old clothes with a coat for a blanket

That wasn't the worst - the worst was the Christmas after losing my mum. I got told on Christmas Day my husband was leaving me ... I have had hum dingers !!!

I could say go and volunteer - that is a great way of getting through the day but I think there are a few ladies who have said they are in the same position as you

Social meet between now and Christmas - and why not wake up next to someone

Who said you have to follow cliches - sometimes we need the warmth of another person .. just for a little while xx

I have woken up alone in my bed now for the past 8 years. I am alone til the kids come in so that makes that bit of sadness go away.

I miss thinking of that special someone and what silly stuff to get them.

Mind you if that special man is out there can put up with me and my family then good luck to you as we do buy some silly stuff for family at Christmas.

My advice is enjoy cooking what you want and watching what you want. Make it all about you and what you want x

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I had lasagne for Christmas dinner last year and spent the day alone.

It wasn't a special day for me, just another day, but it didn't really bother me. As I don't have children and there are no young children in the family, Christmas ceased to be special some time ago. Now I just feel vaguely ill at the commercialism and excess.

This year, having lost someone close unexpectedly a few months ago, will be more difficult I suspect, even though I won't be alone during the day.

London

I must be really weird as I've woken up alone on Christmas Day for the last ten years with the biggest grin on my face, the first downstairs to turn the tree lights on...I love Christmas.

The only time I've felt lonely, sad and depressed at Christmas was the one before I left my husband. My children will be here with their other halves all happy and settled: my happiness knows no bounds.

I've never needed A N Other to complete me and make me happy. As singles we wake up alone every day, I've lost count of the number of threads extolling the joys of being single, yet come the festive season people are anything but. I think it's because we're sold a fantasy surrounding Christmas.

Don't get me wrong, it'd be lovely to have someone special to make a fuss off, but that's for the whole year and not just Christmas.

"I've lost count of the number of threads extolling the joys of being single, yet come the festive season people are anything but. I think it's because we're sold a fantasy surrounding Christmas.

"

very true.

People bang on relentlessly about family at Christmas, often in complete denial and in contradiction to their experiences during the rest of the year. And there is an expectation that everyone sees their family which is what can make it shit being alone. I'm quite happy being estranged from my family but can guarantee that countless people when finding out that I won't be seeing them over christmas will offer advice and more often sympathy... I think that wellmeaning but wholly inappropriate mindset is what makes Christmas tough if you are alone as it can be hard to escape.

OP Christmas alone is what you make it. I've done a few, met up with friends, volunteered, gone away or even in splendid isolation. Just don't get bogged down in others expectations.

Id rather have my own company than in a relationship where all you have is a shared interest in the new fitted kitchen and a mahoosive mortgage.....

Don't get drawn into the bubble... Its all fake, ads on tv, Xmas specials recorded in October. Think of it as a Sunday, indulge yourself.... Cook what U fancy. Or invite others to yours in the evening!!

Boxing day pubs open, or rest that hangover.

i hate this time of year.

designed to make you feel miserable if you havent got people to buy tat for.

its bollocks!

if you enjoy your own company then there is no reason why you cant have a nice time anyway.

most pubs are open on the day, so go for a drink with a couple of mates, even if they have to go home to their wives after.

make it what you want to.

if i could work right the way through, just like any other week, then i seriously would do.

and as for NYE, well thats just as big a rip off as anything else.

makes me sick!

Not single now, but in the past ive been a miserable sod completely opposed to Christmas. I'm not religious and the whole commercial side of it struck me as slightly obscene.

I would simply go for a bike ride, the roads and/or trails are deserted and its usually frosty and beautiful out on the hills.

Do what you would do with any other free day, go for a walk/bike ride etc and then, having done some mood lifting exercise settle down with a bottle of wine and some treats

1. Go to Midnight Mass on Tuesday 24th and give thanks to God for his son Jesus.

2. Still buy your ex a gift.... you see ....it's Christmas the season of good will.

3. Cook a simple meal on Weds the 25th and invite someone less fortunate than yourself round.

Have a great time.

I can't remember the last time I woke up next to someone on Christmas day, 2006 I think

One of my best was in 2003, I was working at Butlins, thought I was going to hate it but it was a laugh, different though.

I have a big family and spend it with them, by boxing day I feel overwhelmed. Last year was stressful as were all on edge with my Mums health, boxing day I ended up escaping to the stables for the day to avoid it all. This year will be similar, I'm the only singlie too so do will end up drained.

So being alone isn't always a bad thing.

As an alternative to all fluffyness at this time of year, why not see how many internet forums and message boards you can leave a rant on.

tell everyone how xmas is a pile of pish based on religious hokum and mythology. And to top it off its now just an an excuse for the peddlars of conspicuous consumption to shove more stuff we dont need at us.
