Have We Just Won Our Best Recent War?

The war we have been waging on Iran with aggressive sanctions looks like it may be coming to a head. The 'modern' state war of sanctions and exclusion may be on the verge of claiming one of it's greatest victories to date.

A climb down of Irans nuclear ambition shows how effective genuine sanctions and patience can be in some instances.

One could argue that the sanctions already achieved a degree of 'regime change' because the people rose to vote for a less extreme leadership.

Some in the West wanted to attack Iran, I think this is a big moment for the diplomats.

There's nothing quite like having a submarine sitting offshore to concentrate diplomatic minds

Of course it's great news to see that diplomacy has lead to an agreement, but it may be a bit early to call this a 'victory'. Compliance with such an agreement will be important in assessing that.

I hope it isn't a widely held view that we are 'at war' with Iran. Iran claims it only has peaceful intentions with respect to its development of nuclear technology and has never threatened the UK.

Iran has also stated that mutual respect is needed for agreements to be reached, I don't think they were intimidated into making this deal. The deal preserves their right to enrich uranium, agreed to be 5%.

Hopefully more productive deals like this will occur in the future.
