Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Why do all the people from the first series of a great US show turn into really skinny people for series two? It doesn't seem to matter the genre or gender but I keep noticing this practice.

There was a character in Dexter called Joey Quinn, really fit athletic well built but not too beefy just right.

His second season in, he was skinny as a rake and looked like a kid wearing his dad's shirt. But apparently that was down to drugs.

That may well be the cause with others too for all I know. I just find it a bit sad that people who look great get so thin and then are told they look great.

I'm on the 4th season of Breaking Bad and think Walter White's wife looks more pregnant now her character's had the baby than when she was pregnant in the series! But without the bump. Am I making sense?
