Underactive Thyroid

Who in here has an underactive thyroid? I show a few of the symptoms and have done for a few years but never affected me a great deal.

I go through periods where I just feel odd, like I'm not 100% awake and like I am in a bubble. I feel lethargic and just don't want to do anything. Last night I slept for 12 hours after feeling sick and still feel spaced out now.

I have some dry skin but nothing too bad and have days when I just feel low.

I also posted about muscle aches and wonder if it all ties in.

It seems like it is getting worse as have been like this for a couple of weeks now hence why I sat up and took notice. I have called to make an appointment with my doctor (in 2 weeks )

So until then, Is it something that came on suddenly or did the symptoms appear and gradually get worse?

I did have a blood test about 3 or 4 years ago where my thyroid was tested but he said I something was raised but everything else looked ok.

The only way to know is to get a blood test to confirm this. I developed mine aged 12.

I was falling asleep in school and gaining weight rapidly..

Cant remember much of the early days so cant help. Hope you get some answers though.

I was diagnosed with under active thyroid a few years back. I now take thyroxine tablets for life.

I also have regular blood tests to check my dosage, which has risen from 50 to 125 mg over the years. After a while the thyroid stops working completely, so getting diagnosed ASAP is good.

It can cause depression, weight gain, hair loss and dry skin, all of which improves as the dosage is corrected.

One thing though, because the meds are for life, you get free prescriptions for life as well, not just the thyroxine, but anything else.

A simple blood test will sort your diagnosis out. Good luck x

Cant u just have a 5 min emergency appointment.. explain your symptoms and at least that dr can authorize a blood test between now and the appointment in 2 weeks to talk over the results

I did ask if there were any same day slots or telephone appointments but I'm too late but can try on Monday.

When I stated the problem she just said 'It's not urgent' then, I thought better end the call before I said something. Shes a snotty cow who I've had a run in with before but deffo calling again Monday xx

I have underactive thyroid . Being treated for it . But regularly becomes unsettled or borderline . Apparently there 2 readings when the results come back . One is the amount of thyroxine in your blood and the other is the message from the brain to the thyroid . Ask lots of questions when you get your appointment. If they say its borderline ask for a printout . I feel less lethargic when I make sure I eat really well 5-6 small portions a day , drink plenty of water and take some light exercise each day .

I was diagnosed about 8 years ago and I also have Pernicious anaemia. I found out I had it after I changed dramatically over a 6 month period. I Had always been skinny and full of energy, and I went from a size 6 to a 12 and all I wanted to do was sleep. I take 150mg a day and have done since I was diagnosed. Simple blood test is all it takes x

Yes .. since I was 43 . tired weight gain depression itchy skin hair loss lack of libido and other related autoimmune conditions all added to that. I started on 100mcg now 175/200 alternately.

I would ring again and ask for a blood test to be taken prior to your doctors appointment. the nurse can do that. then the results will be back. Receptionists are not God .. insist on a nurse appointment.

Thanks girls.

I occasionally get itchy skin but thought I was just hot. Maybe it's nothing but really do need it checked out as the symptoms point in that direction.

I usually have loads of energy but have really noticed the decline over the last few weeks. Used to survive on 6 hours sleep a night then at the yard 8-6 then shopping but still be able to keep going.

Yes, another sufferer here! Get tested as soon as you can. I just go to the nurse for a blood test and go back to the doc another day for my results. There are load of different symptoms so best to get checked. Good luck.

I would say wait until you get results. It was the first thing I was tested for when I had similar problems with lethargy and sleepiness. After 4 different doctors it took returning to my original doctor I had as a child to get a referral to the neurological unit at the hospital where they diagnosed me with Narcolepsy.

Hope they find the solution soon. I know how lethargy sucks. I'm also a bipolar depressive and so I get a double whammy when I am feeling down.

I have a under active thyroid I'm on 200mg a day of thyroxin. My results change every test they do. I'm back at the hospital in a couple of hours as they now think it's all hormone related due to a lesion on my peturirty glad. I've had a tc scan which showed something there but they are unclear what. They did suggest a possible tumor so I get brain serum results today. If the results are ok the endocrinologist suggests my thyroid might have just stopped working. But who knows. Symptoms varies from person to person I can sleep for hours get up then fall asleep again. I also suffer really bad pins and needles in me thumbs and palms of my hands. Hot sweats and bad headaches. But everyone is different.

I'd definitely push for a phone appointment on Monday. They can then send you for your blood tests and you'll have the results long before the two week wait for an appointment.

I'm a good old hypo, been diagnosed about 6 months now, my issues were the lethargy, brain fog and memory, so finding out I wasnt stupid or lazy was great

Currently my TSH is rising along with with the raise in my Levy, but I'm it'll be sorted.

Hey!

I was diagnosed 2years ago with an under active thyroid. I'm only on 50micrograms a day currently. The side affects of a u/t are awful and I suffer really bad with tiredness. I also have terrible skin and my hair / nails have thinned also. But crikey don't get me started on mood swings

I fought for years to get a diagnosis because I knew something wasn't quite right with myself.

Even if you come back as borderline I would push to be started on thyroxine, it will give you that boost that you need.

Good luck & don't take any crap from your gp xx

I had all the symptoms of under active thyroid, so much so when I went to see the doctor he took one look at me and said you have an under active thyroid. When the blood tests came back I was clear. On further investigation they found I had prolactinoma, symptoms can be similar

I've been under active for 14 years now. Yearly blood test and thyroxine for life keep it in check. I agree with other comments not to leave it go too long without diagnosis. My levels changed drastically once and I suffered acute depression as a result. Thyroid is an important thing in the body. Once sorted you should be good. Useful books often in chemists. Also plenty of info on the web x

I had an overactive thyroid bout 6 yrs ago and itbhit my heart liver every bloody organ...it was bad and the weight just dropped off. Was treated for 2 yrs then discharged. Since then ive felt like it was underactive and lately i felt quite ill again lethargic..dryskin..aching muscles weight gain etc went to gp n my bp was that high he give me tabs straight away n im waiting in cardiac appt but had full blood tests done n my thyroid under so just started treatment. Underactive isnt dangerous like the over active but fucking annoying so def make apptt and get it checked. Good luck with it x
