"Hull has many good attractions, Ferrens Art Gallery, Willberforce House, both free plus The Deep and many other museums and other free atractions. Im a culture junkie ive seen exhibition's of work by Hockney, Constable and Canaleto. Plus a 3 day summer art's festival with a concert of headliner acts. These are just a small selection of things ive sampled in Hull. " Perhaps this is why it has been named city of culture 2017.....

"Hull.... A city a culture? That has to be a joke Sorry Hullites" Hull has been named City Of Culture? That's a bit like naming Jimmy Savile 'Childrens entertainer of the year'

"It hasn't done Londonderry any harm this year, and it really was a shithole. " Has it done any good though? " Never been to Hull, but may make the effort now." Hull, as someone said on the radio, isn't on the way to anywhere. You have to make a decision to go there, for no reason other than to go there. I wonder if that'll be enough.

"It hasn't done Londonderry any harm this year, and it really was a shithole. Never been to Hull, but may make the effort now." Bit harsh, Derry isn't a shit hole at all. When you look at Belfast and ones running riot over a flag and you call derry a shit hole? Done this place a lot of good this year, lots of events on all year round place has been buzzing.

"......... Worked in glasgow in the 80's90's when they were city of culture, and it made for a very cool, party place then. support the arts, its better than all the other bollocks we have to put up with." It's sometimes forgotten that Glasgow was European City of Culture. The title Dundee didn't get was UK City of Culture.

You know that is right, I must admit I was a little worried that they were running out of cities. It was still a fab place to be at the time, full of energy.

The view at the time was that it was a parting 2 fingered gesture from Thatcher who'd done her best to ruin the city. Her plan backfired spectacularly, as visitors to the city can see now. We even have shops on both sides of the street.

"The Land of Green Ginger " I didn't know it was a street in Hull until R4 this evening (a whole feature on Hull getting City of Culture and reminding people of Larkin working there). The Land of Green Ginger was a book I read as a child about Aladdin's son and the Genie of the Lamp. I loved it.

"In all honestly Hull ain't that bad. You don't have any no go areas like other places and I am not afraid to walk anywhere in the city at night. Some area's are rough bit you get that in all cities and towns. I think it will provide a welcome boost and hopefully the whole area will benefit. As for the culture bit everywhere has culture but if you are blinkered by what you read in the press you will not know about it. Come visit in 2017 and attend some of the events and I am sure your perception will change." With a bit of planning, events will be spread across the whole year and not crammed into 10 days, like Glasgow's Commonwealth Games*. This has resulted in an increase in hotel room charges being increased by 400-500% - even in towns 20+ miles away. There's nothing quite as satisfying as ripping off tourists, is there? *not just the Commie Games, the Ryder Cup hotels are at it too.

"....... Either that or find an outsized stewards costume and ship him out somewhere for the year " There's talk that Illustrious will be berthed in Hull. What we'll do should we feel obliged to help the victims of a typhoon half-way around the world is anyone's guess.
